leicaguy604 Posted July 17, 2021 Share #1  Posted July 17, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Did multiple searches for this but only found something somewhat similar from several years ago. Anyways I purchased a 35mm Summicron asph from a guy. Its in great shape overall but the issue is that he had a polarizing filter installed. With the filter attached the lens hood isn't removable. I've read everything from the rubber band technique to applying pressure, etc but I still haven't found a way around this unless I were to essentially break the lens hood so I can unscrew the part of the filter that's attached to the lens. My intention is to use the lens on an m6 so the polarizing filter in my opinion is kind of pointless due to it being a rangefinder. Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted July 17, 2021 Share #2 Â Posted July 17, 2021 Just give it to your local repair shop. A polarizing filter does work on an M, the same as on any other camera, but it is a bit of a hassle to align it.
jaeger Posted July 17, 2021 Share #3  Posted July 17, 2021 I just had a similar episode last week! lol try to blow hot air into the filter and keep the lens as cold as possible. Youtube has some demonstrations as well. Don't rush it, the more you wanna get it off, the more it get stuck, c'est la vie. Thats what I'm gonna try tomorrow and see if the shop has a way of screwing it off somehow. I know its usable on an m but you're totally right about it being a hassle. I just hope to be able to get it off.

No way! Did you use a torch or a hair dryer? Thats what I've seen online and I guess the idea is the top part of the filter will expand and not keep spinning? leicaguy604 Posted July 17, 2021 Author Share #6 Â Posted July 17, 2021 Ok..so an update..I was applying a bit of pressure and the lens hood came off! Doesn't seem like the filter was even threaded on I guess. Now thats taken care of as I further inspect the lens hood it seems to come off rather easily. Is this common?
a.noctilux Posted July 17, 2021 Share #7 Â Posted July 17, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Maybe the hood's springs are recessed. When you have the hood in hand, just push the releasing two buttons, do the four pins inside move ?

Just a bit of pressure without touching the release buttons and the hood pops off..
a.noctilux Posted July 17, 2021 Share #9 Â Posted July 17, 2021 I think that the spring is weak to retain the hood. However you didn't answer if the pushing of the two buttons have some actions on the four pins, when the hood is off the lens. The four pins must be in the groove of the Summicron (without filter, in this case) to retain the hood.

Hi sorry yes when the hood is off the lens and the buttons and pressed all 4 pins do what they are supposed to do. Perhaps its just wear and tear in terms of the hood coming off and on over the years..
a.noctilux Posted July 20, 2021 Share #11 Â Posted July 20, 2021 (edited) I had done some "urgent solution", a rubber ring in the groove, or a dab of nail polish if my wife has at hand, four dabs where the hood's pins fall in the groove of the lens. Â If the pins are not stuck, then they can retain the hood without filter, of course. Edited July 20, 2021 by a.noctilux
