I was shooting panoramas off a neighbour's dock in Ontario's cottage country a couple of nights ago when my M8 (purchased in February) stopped working. I got an "ERR" message in the view finder and on the LCD back two messages: "attention drive blocked" and then "attention shutter fault". Over night I took the battery out and in the morning tried to revive the camera. No joy so I packed it up and sent it from Ontario Canada to Solms via Canada Post Courier and emailed both Leica Solms and the Leica agent in Hong Kong about my problem. Both acknowledged my message and now I am waiting to see what will happen. I want my repaired or replaced camera sent to Hong Kong (home town) and in the meantime through the kindness of friends I have gone back to shooting film. I am not particularly happy but then these things do happen. I hope the waiting time for the return of the camera won't be too long.

You have my sympathies, Howard. But you're not far away from Toronto, or just go to Barrie, where you should be able to find a lot of digitals ... and film.

Hello LUFers,

The camera wasn't exposed to static electricity or moisture. It just died - taking the lens off you could see, from the absense of the white band for exposure metering, that the shutter hadn't reset itself. Hopefully I will have a repaired or replacement camera waiting for me when I get back to Hong Kong. In the meantime I am using a borrowed M6 so I am back shooting film and avoiding the urge to chimp.

Here is a sad update. My M8 has been lost by DHL somewhere between Wilmington Ohio and Dillenburg Germany. Talking with the polite operators who read what the computer says about the whereabouts of my camera proves beyond doubt that garbage in equals garbage out. Of course, Purolator Canada limits insurance to a maximum of C$1,000 so if the camera is gone (and the last confirmed trace is from August 30th) I am out about C$3,600. I have initiated a search by both Canada Post and DHL which promises to report tomorrow. Of course, the camera - serial number 3104564 - is worthless unless repaired and there is only one place where it can be repaired and that is Solms. If someone with sticky fingers is silly enough to send it for repair I may still get it back. The prospect of having to buy another one is not very exciting.

Sorry to hear that Howard, but...

Why oh why you sent it by Canada Post???

Why not some better courier service that lets you insure it for a full value??

I see you are living in HK. WHy didn't you wait to get "home" and deal with this problem locally (with your dealer)?

I did lost a expensive lens by FedEx a few years ago, it was fully insured and once the procedure for "refund" started, lens showed up (after almost 2 months) in banged out (wet) box...

I was lucky at the end...

I wish you luck, and I hope many people will read this and learn from your troubles...

Sorry to here this. I have a question.

You say DHL lost your package but you also say you sent it Canada Post Courier. How did DHL get it? And why didn't you use either DHL or FedEx or UPS to start with and insure it for the full replacement value.

 

Seems kind of #$%@ to send a $5000 piece of equipment someplace and only insure it for 1/5 it's value.

Sorry to hear your bad experience, Howard, and I hope you could recover your loss in one way or another.

 

To those who don't know ... Purolator is a subsidiary of Canada Post and Canada Post never accept insurance on a single item over 1000 (Canadian) dollars. USPS, DHL et al are their cross border agents who handle foreign bound packages.

 

UPS always charges very high brokerage fee ... IMO the only (relatively) good service in Canada (both in and out) is FedEX.

Let's hope your camera package is inside bigger package. DHL did that to me once. Never used them since then. I requisted package to be returned to me since it was taking too long. They worked hard to locate the package, but they could not locate. Last track they had was it had arrived Narita. Next time they called me to tell me they still don't know where it is, it had already returned to me and I had alrady shipped it via FedEx.

 

So, hopefully, they can't track does not mean they lost it.

 

I hope it turns up.

One of the many reasons I stopped using UPS: they often would show a package 'in transit' long after it had arrived at its destination.

 

I agree that in my experience DHL is the worst of the lot, but let's not give up all hope yet.

The reason the camera went Purolator / Canada Post was because I was in Ontario Cottage Country and it was simpler to use the post office than find a real courier company.

In 20 - 20 hindsight I should have held on to the camera until I got back to civilization and then sent it fully insured but I was in a hurry to get it to Solms and repaired or replaced. Silly me! DHL called me today to say their last records are of the camera in transit from Ohio to New York but earlier in the week Purolator told me the package had made it to Dillenburg Germany and 2 attempts had been made to deliver it. The inconsistencies in information is what freaks me out. DHL said they would get back to me again by Friday 5 p.m. so we shall see. Day by day I become less optimistic. :-(
