Advertisement Posted June 25, 2021 Posted June 25, 2021 Hi Harrydog, Take a look here CL How waterproof?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

I assume a bit of sea spray/drizzle is OK or is it so fragile that its only for summer? Mild sea spray/drizzle should be ok. A direct shot to the buttons or dials with a strong stream of water may be an issue however. I took a close shot of the beach and a wave snuck up on me and sand & water got to the outside edges of the dials and buttons. I quickly dried off what I could with my shirt and later used a sliver of paper to get the few grains of sound out. All seems to be ok, but I was concerned.
ramarren Posted June 27, 2021 Share #3  Posted June 27, 2021 I haven't dunked mine into a stream to test it, but I've used it through cold, hot, rain, and dust conditions. I protect it as I have protected every camera I've ever owned ... try to keep it from being doused outright, from being dropped or bashed too hard, etc. I stick it into some kind of shoulder bag when I'm not shooting with it, and have it in my hand when I am... I'm particularly careful at places like the beach or if I happen to be on a cruise because salt water and fine sand can get into and destroy anything, including sealed cameras, but it's been through those conditions without a hiccup, given a modicum of care in handling. In cases of blowing fine grit or spray, I fit a protection filter to keep the front elements of my lenses from getting etched. My CL has not proven to be any more fragile than any M, or other camera, I've owned. In my use, it has so far had a flawless track record. G
nicci78 Posted July 5, 2021 Share #4  Posted July 5, 2021 CL is not weatherproof at all. There is no rubber gasket to be found anywhere. That's the painful truth !  You can use it under rain. It may or may not survive. It is your own responsibility.
LocalHero1953 Posted July 5, 2021 Share #5  Posted July 5, 2021 No it's not designed or sold as weatherproof, but should be quite safe in use in fine mist, though I would keep it under a jacket when not taking a shot. I would be more cautious with sea spray because of the salt and corrosion risks.
pgk Posted July 5, 2021 Share #6 Â Posted July 5, 2021 Quite simply, if it doesn't have an IP rating then it has no defined waterproofness/waterresitance and should be assumed not to be at all waterproof/waterresistant.
oldwino Posted July 7, 2021 Share #7 Â Posted July 7, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would say the correct answer is: not at all.

If you read the meaning of IP ratings, virtually no "weatherproof" camera is waterproof/weather resistant, as most if not all will only have IP 52: Quote Vertically dripping water shall have no harmful effect when the enclosure is tilted at an angle up to 15° from its normal position. Or IP 53: Quote Water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from the vertical shall have no harmful effect. Which offers little to no protection from driving rain coming in horizontally or spray coming in from the side or below and more importantly from the main cause of water damage to electronics: internal moisture from condensation. IP ranking chart. Read "weatherproof" as "our marketing department has found out that there are a few pieces of rubber in the top plate of the camera". As a comparison: An iPhone 12 has an IP rating of 68. Now THAT is waterproof.
SoCalLeicanator Posted July 14, 2021 Share #9 Â Posted July 14, 2021 This was my concern as well (and a rationalization to ring in my 50th with a Q2. . . )
jaapv Posted July 14, 2021 Share #10  Posted July 14, 2021 Well, Leica is rather conservative with these ratings. There are plenty of reports of Leicas surviving immersions. But there are no guarantees.
Peter_S Posted July 14, 2021 Share #11  Posted July 14, 2021 (edited) I have no idea about the CL, but I have used the M8, M9M, X1, and T in snow often (I mean it) and also in the rain, and have never encountered problems (with water, that is). But then, one man`s "never" means little, and corrosion can be a slow process. For what it is worth (though slighly OT), since it is a similar camera: the Fuji X-T1 is the camera that has survived the hardest abuse in my books (including -30 and heavy snow in Siberia as well as a cracked rip and pneumothorax on my end when I fell on it; the XT1 and VM Ultron 21mm attached to it kept working flawlessly to this day. So does my lung). I am quite sure none of the above mentioned would have survived as well.  Edited July 14, 2021 by Peter_S 1
huwm Posted July 17, 2021 Share #12  Posted July 17, 2021 I'll let you know in about a week. Capsized in some rapids through inattention in canoe yesterday. My waterproof (doesn't need rain cover, but not actually a dry bag) rucksack kept my Q2 and the other lenses for the CL pretty much completely dry despite a couple of minutes immersion. The CL and 70-300 was tipped out with various shoes prescription sunglasses etc. Unbelievably my daughter who was in separate kayak hopped out and gathered everything up including the camera and glasses by searching the area where the flow slackened off. I had a look too, lovely warm water at the moment so we had our swimming stuff including goggles all to hand but all I found was a shoe from the next canoe to come down and which went over in the same spot whilst we were looking, without any expectation of success, for my stuff. What was I doing with camera out? Well lovely day, really calm, why not, doh. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid Kit stays on shore or in proper dry bags in future. Basmati in use will leave at least 7days. Not very hopeful.
Herr Barnack Posted July 17, 2021 Share #13 Â Posted July 17, 2021 Think of the CL as being just as "waterproof" as a film M and you will have a built in margin of safety.

One thing to try with yours is get a cooler and put a 60 watt tungsten bulb in it, may assist the rice.
huwm Posted July 21, 2021 Share #16  Posted July 21, 2021 Have just changed the rice in the camera ‘box’ from basmati to arborio Camera looks lovely and dry Another 3days yet though Not enough rice for a change for the lens so have gone with couscous Still moisture visible so maybe lot longer

My Sonys have survived 30m plus so far ..... The problem with being waterproof is all about definitions. IMO anything intended to have any degree of water resistance with moving controls has to maintained on a regular basis anyway. Very few people will pay for a periodic CLA to maintain water resistant integrity and this include underwater housings. I maintain mine myself - 'O' ring technology is tried and tested and very simple - the best sort of technology.

TMorita Posted August 3, 2021 Share #19  Posted August 3, 2021 Leica makes no claims as to water resistance or water proof or weather proof.  https://us.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-CL-TL2/Leica-CL/Details  I avoid getting mine wet for this reason.  Toshi
gfweir Posted August 10, 2021 Share #20 Â Posted August 10, 2021 I went overboard in Long Island this weekend; lifejacket inflated as it should do, I grabbed backpack and passed it quickly to my wife on board the vessel we were alongside, she ran to galley and rinsed the CLÂ off with fresh water. I finished righting the dingy, climbed on board and rinsed camera some more. Â Dried it off as best I could and then resigned myself to the fact that it was in all probability now a paperweight and carried on with the weekend. Camera was in water for less than a minute. Spoke to Leica in Soho and at service yesterday morning; yup, it's probably beyond repair but they will be happy to evaluate it. At this stage I'm probably just going to go with a new one. $3,100 with an 18mm in stock in the city. Â Not that keen on the 18mm however it's pretty much a free lens at that price.
