SL2-S w/Sigma MC-21 mount using Canon EF lenses - *issues with image stabilization menu option*

just recently purchase the SL2-S with Sigma MC-21 mount converter and I noticed a few things that I wanted to put out just in case someone was attempting the same thing I am. I am a full Canon shooter and wanted to try the SL2-S at sports instead of just portraits so I purchased it. My DG Sigma Art Line 35mm works perfect with the SL2-S and the menu option of Image Stabilization is selectable. I can toggle it on and off with the Sigma lens, but when I attach my Canon 70-200 f2.8 III and also my Canon 400mm f2.8 III, that same menu selection is greyed out and NOT selectable. I also noticed that on the EF 400MM f2.8, it only goes down to f3.2 using the sigma adapter. BUT, when I attached the 70-200mm f2.8 , it stays at f2.8. So I don't know why it changes from the 200 to the 400. Going to test it today covering a two big baseball games to see how it operates.

If the lens has an IS switch then that's what controls the IS, so the menu item will be greyed out.

The MC-21 does not support AFC, at all. So it'll be single shot only. And Sigma make no claims that Canon lenses are compatible, only theirs with an EF mount.

I recently bought a cheap EF converter off Amazon and it doesn't have electronics, so I can't change aperture on EF lenses.
I have an old 80-200mm (Magic Drainpipe) will I be able to change the aperture using the Sigma MC-21 adapter? I'm not too fuss about auto-focus etc as it's for video purpose only...

Thanks

Sigma-21 works (focus, aperture and EXIF) with most EF-lenses, see https://www.sigma-global.com/en/accessories/mc-21/?tab=support&local=table&table_id=11867.

funny name "Drainpipe". you can change aperture on all EF lenses on the sigma, compatible list is more for AF, but if you are in MF you are ok

I am wondering other Tokina zoom lenses are AF compatible with SL2-S & MC-21.

Anyone tried Tokina 24-70mm f2.8 Pro lens?

I once tried it on SL601 (with MF) accidentally and results were quite satisfying. Honestly, surprised.

The result came out much better than Canon DSLR body.

It is interesting that some EF zoom lenses show much better resolution with SL body.

I also heard that EF 17-40mm f4 L lens works much better on SL body.

Maybe Leica’s M lens optimized sensor thickness matters?

I wish Tokina zoom works with SL2-S or SL3 :)

I’m reviving this informative thread. I have a new to me SL2 and want to use my old Canon favorite lens of all time the original 35L 1.4.
I bought the Viltrox adapter first and the combination wouldn’t work.
Today I got in the Sigma MC-21 and tested it first with my Canon 40mm pancake and it works perfectly.
Next I put on my 35L. It is perfect when manually focusing as it tenders beautifully. When trying to use it in AF mode (AFS) it focuses twice like it is unsure and never gets close to the target. I’ve tried all focus fields and nothing improves it.
Thanks in advance for your help!!

I don't have the SL2, but the Panasonic S5. My Canon 35L version 1 behaves the same way with the MC21 and S5, it was very disappointing. Manual focus is fine because it's mechanical, but autofocus is a complete wash. It attempts focus, racks back and forth, then settles completely out of focus. The MC21 is a mixed bag with older Canon lenses, as Sigma optimize for their own products and not legacy lenses. But even some Sigma products are a little iffy; the 24-105mm f4 has issues with autofocus, sometimes missing focus just enough to make the subject slightly blurry. Native L mount lenses perform much better.

@arshots It's interesting that the newer Sigma 35mm f1.4 EF mount works well on the MC21 and SL2S, but is the cost saving compared with the native L mount version and AF performance enough to make me want to buy it for my S5? I'm not sure.

I've read that L mount bodies like the S5 II and S5 II X with phase detect work much, much better with the MC21.

Viltrox is not an L-mount Partner, and they have firmware on the adapter that needs lots of work, but the challenge is they just reverse engineer the system and don't test many lenses.

I would stay away from it.

Even the Viltrox macro extension set, which has no software, does not work with most Leica lenses, the lenses have to be designed to support it.

Using a Canon 40mm f2.8 STM lens on a Leica SL2-S via the Sigma MC-21:

  1. - Do I have to manually enter the 40mm focal length in the camera for stabilisation?
  2. - Or does the camera automatically recognise that it is a 40mm lens?
  3. - Will the name of the lens be mentioned in the Exif files?

Thanks in advance
