I love the summaron but its got me in to photographing people with a 28mm lens [my grand kids] ,trouble is i sometimes run out of light so now i am thinking of a faster alternative 28mm!! for those low light woodland walks etc.

I always struggled with the 28mm before the summaron but now i am 28mm man! life is weird.

How much was the summilux again?

great combo, I came from Summicron....to Summaron (which I. love) ...to Summilux....but I won't give up the Summaron

Yes, if you shoot a white wall, the vignette is obvious. But for normal shots it's not at all a problem and for street photography it is perfect with a zone focus. I encourage you to test it versus a modern digital lens and you will see that it is much better than you would expect for it's size and age.

Once I put it on my camera, it makes me smile, and often my subjects smile too. I do not use the nice but relatively large lens shade as I normally don't use shades anyway, and this does have modern coatings and the lens is very recessed anyway.  The camera with this lens is now an admittedly expensive but unique point and shoot. It finally fits in a pocket for real. Yeah, so does an iPhone, but an iPhone is just not a pleasure to use. No I don't have a regular 28mm, but so far, I don't need one. Thanks to Gary for telling me to get this gem.

Congratulations again for your purchase of this very fine craft lens.  And kudos for taking the risk on something so different.

Would the elmarit 28mm V3 be a good faster compliment to my summaron?  i mean it might fit in with my summaron reissue, voigtlander 40mm f1.4 and 90mm f2.8 elmarit?

All opinions welcome,even mocking ones.

I do enjoy all the history stuff and though i own the nokton 21mm asph i mostly seem to prefer older designs or modern versions of older designs especially for my main project of recording my grand kids lives.

Yes, Steve,

see my post #2

😇

...while waiting 28mm Summicron asph.

I am getting more and more interested in this lens. I would like to have a black version. But there seems to be a lack of stock.

Very hard to find and expect to pay a good deal more than the silver version.

Don’t worry too much they are very ugly. There was one at €5000 at Schouten a few weeks ago.

As always, it's a matter of taste.
On a black Leica M my black Summaron is much less noticeable and therefore more appropriate.
Only at these collector's prices I do hardly dare to take my Summaron for a walk.🙂
Therefore an also black Voigtländer 3.5-28mm ltm with adapter has to be used more often, which not only has additional exposure latitude but a screw-on lens hood and also the E39 filter size, which was most commonly used at Leica.

On reflection i am going to stick with my summaron and not buy another 28mm lens.

My thinking is that the summaron has beautiful rendering and if sometimes i have to use ISO 3200 so be it,as it still produces nice images at that speed so why muddy the water with another 28?

Congratulations, you overcame GAS. Let us know how you did it.

Probably by looking at his current bank statements, that works for me.

I don't mean to steer the general idea of this thread in a different direction, so if I need to post this as its own topic, I will do so. Additionally, this is probably a question that I should be emailing DAG with, but here it is anyway:

I had my 50's LTM 28 Summaron CLA'd by a well-know repair person (not DAG). The lens had some haze, which was cleaned during the service. The lens now has some visible "cleaning marks," which, I suppose, were to be expected, and do not affect the image to any discernable degree-- but it is a bit of a bummer nevertheless. I have really fallen in love with this lens over the last few months, and began to wonder:

Are the elements of the current 28mm, f/5.6 Summaron available for the purposes of repair? Could I send the lens off to DAG and have his replace the elements with the those from the current iteration of the lens? Am I misunderstanding the process of lens repair? Is this even a cost-effective venture? Probably not, but I though I'd see if anyone had any insight.

I'd go simple way,

in your place, I'd ask DAG

...

just in case, another way, if you use only on your M,

I'm happy with new 28mm Summaron-M, so if you want to use the lens with peace of mind, new M lens would do,

if the dilemma of cost/repair/etc. and trade the LTM if need be.

...

Third option, just use the lens as is then be happy 😉.

@Brancbūth

Sorry not be able to help you more, just suggestions for you to choose.

No, this is perfectly helpful. I think I'm just being neurotic. While the element damage may show itself with a digital M, I only shoot with an M3-- and only with Tri-X-- so I there is no noticeable effect. Thank you for the suggestions!
