Good evening, here a brand new Leica user. The proud owner of a Q2 for 3 weeks now. Very happy, of course. I have already found some interesting threads here about half cases and full cases. I would prefer not to use any case, but the Q2 is too precious for me to lug around unprotected. What I was wondering: does a half case offer enough protection? (the full cases are so ugly and big). Do you put your Q2 in half case in a backpack? In a bag with other items? As long as I have the Q2 around my neck I see no problem, but how does one put it in a bag? Perhaps a half case with extension to full case is the most sensible? Curious about your experienced advice, thanks.

I don't think that it is a good idea to put it in a backpack at all. It is a camera that is meant to be used.
If you have to stop, unsling your pack, dig it out and take it from its protective bag, any photo opportunity will have been long gone.
Just get a small bum bag, add some padding and carry the camera around your waist, ready for use.

I found hanging the camera on the neck is really inviting the pain in the neck. Instead, I have a strap long enough to hang on my shoulder, across the chest to the other side of the waist. All my cameras have either a half case of a L bracket for protection. Sometimes I also have a waist bag for further protection against tree or wall or people, or raining.

I have XV and XU which are similar to Q that does not need to be in the backpack, but for the larger one like SL, I have it in the city walk backpack with a lunch bag type protector.  If you have a camera backpack, the divider comes with should be enough.

I previously used the Leica OEM leather case (half case) and have no complaints with it.  It offers protection where needed and also adds some additional grip when handling the camera. Then I found the Leica L grip (handgrip) and prefer it over the leather case.  It is highly personal choice to make.  I would obtain a case (or rent one) and use it for a week to see if it suits your fancy.  As far as keeping your camera in a backpack, I agree with Jaapv, it's not the place to carry your camera.

I understand your desire to protect the camera, and sometimes we do have to put it into a pack. I had this desire with my M9 and bought a Artisan&Artist Rina Case which fits the Q2 very well. It is still listed on their website so I presume it is still available.

I do keep the Q2 in a half case for protection.

Depends how invested you are on your existing backpack:) I would not put it in a backpack "free" to move around, not even inside a cloth. There are several backpacks that are photo-oriented and they are great as regular backpacks too. Here is a non-exhaustive list of brands with backpacks I have personally tested and enjoyed: Manfrotto (I even have one for sale!), Peak Design, Boundary Supply and WANDRD (the PRVKE 31 is what I am using now).

Having said that and depending how much you want / have to lug around every day, there are smaller options as well. If you can do with around 10 litres, I would look at Peak Design's 10L Sling which takes smaller laptops as well, but ymmv as you only know what you NEED with you every day!

Usually just a half case when walking around taking pictures, sometime a peak design sling that can double up as a bum bag depending on how you configure the strap.

Thanks to lockdown I’ve not been hill walking since I got my Q2. With previous cameras, I’d usually walk with the camera on a strap cross-body, but with a peak design capture clip attached to one of the rucksack straps so I can clip the camera in more securely when clambering over rough terrain.

If it was pelting down with rain, I might put it inside the rucksack, either on its own but rolled inside a spare fleece, or inside a small lowepro bag. Not tried that with the Q2 or peak design bag though. The latter maybe too large.

Thank you all; very helpful. Last thing I was wondering is how useful a half case is. It protects the strongest part of the metal body, while leaving the vulnerable parts (buttons, viewfinder, screen, lens rings) unprotected. Do half-case-users think you avoided damage to your camera?

I use an Arte de mano half-case with the Aventino grip. It has the bottom flap for easy access to the battery and memory card. I use a 120cm Adm cotton strap. I honestly don’t know how it could be better. I love it. I wear the camera over one shoulder and across my body when walking. One hand often resting on it for added protection in tight quarters or crowds. My hand offers some protection from the top being banged. It slides around easily for taking photos.

I use the Leica Neopren Bag (small) quite a lot. (Leica 14867)
It's perfect for putting it in my motorcycle back-pack or any bag, that is safe from hits or any rough handling-situations.

I got the original Thumb-Grip and Leica handgrip. The lens hood ist allways on. --> the neopren bag is designed for M-Body, but it fits

Its quite troblesome to find a small Bag, that is just for the the Q (with the accessoires that iam using).
There are lots of small bags, but neither of them is small enough (for me) to put it in my backpack. (billingham 72 would be my favourite, if i want a beautiful looking one with good materials, but a bit to big on the outside and i do not care about the aesthetics)

At the moment iam searching for a small Bag (Colt-Design) that allows me to put it on my waist Strap, while iam hiking. (any recommendations here are welcome, it should be as small as possible and should not dongle around)

I have two LowePro Camera bags to store the camera inside the backpack or messenger bag

one Nova 140 AW 140 II,fit Q2 with thumb grip, hand grip and finger loop in one side and my Metz strobe and the ELPRO 50
one similar as above bit half of with to store only the Q2, I don't have it here so I can't check the model number

When I am not using the camera the bag is closed, other wise the bag is open to extract the camera thru the side zipper of my watertight sling backpack

Just go in a big shop who sell photo bags and check what model will fit the Q2

Then the smaller Lowepro I wrote above, it has loops for a belt but I am not sure if it fits the belt of your backpack.
If you live in Germany check at Media Markt, Saturn or similar shops, they have a broad choice of those small bags.
