If you use a Mac, you can also use Image Capture.app to simply copy all the photos from your iPhone to a folder of your choice on your hard drive and work from them.  Image Capture lets you avoid using Photos.

The file format of an iPhone is HEIF or HEVC. Are you exporting one of those and trying to open as JPG?

If you select ‘most compatible’ in camera settings photos will be saved JPEGs.

Or, alternately, if you open and select the images in your camera roll, choose Export to Lightroom, then open Lightroom Mobile on your phone, they will be imported into Lightroom CC (not Classic) on all your devices automatically. You can then move them anywhere you want, in your case LR Classic, or edit them in LR, obviously.

Surely it’s just easier to connect the phone to the computer and press the import button in Lightroom.

This works extremely efficiently, far simpler than describing the process. You only have to select/export to LR the photographs in your phone, open your LRmob, and they are there on all your devices.
No rummaging around for cables, you don't need to start or even be near your computer. You can do it on location from anywhere in the world.
