Hi,

I am mulling to buy a Leica M Monochrome Typ 246. I know it has an optional EVF and I have read some negative reviews about it.

I have some experience with the M10 Visoflex, how worse is the one for the M Monochrom?

Cheers

I never used M10+Visoflex however from what I know secondhand I wouldn’t consder EVF to be good accessory in terma of response time.

Regarding M240/246 i have Epson original which is functionally same as rebadged  Leica, it is ok for framing with wide lenses and any other lens but it only enables focusing in the centre of frame. It suffers from painfully slow time lag, works fine for static photography. Thankfully RF on M240/246 is robust, I never had any problems with it.

Is it true that a new version of Typ 020 will come out soon, with higher resolution?

I also heard that it may not fit the regular M10.

I do not know about this, but good luck with the current batteries...

Absolutely not.
Leica stores are saying not to expect newer Visoflex before M11.

If you like EVF just grab a CL or an SL2.
Then only use M10 with its rangefinder.

Or a cheap SL, its EVF is  far better than mediocre, it handles heavy tele’s better too than an M240 or newer

So using a regular M10 is best done without any EVF. I just thought of getting one for use with lenses in non-Leica mounts.  Would this be "wrong"?

Nothing "wrong" with that.

When I need the Visoflex 020, I just use it with it's "flaws" in mind.

I use the EVF often when in doubt with RF accuracy.

The EVF is tiltable 90 degrees .

The Typ 020 is rather costly for a plastic "thing", but it is a "Leica thing" after all.

I find using the screen at the back of the M10 not very useful with LiveView when there is strong sunlight around me. The Typ 020 will be maybe better for such light conditions.

I have a Visoflex II (I think). It is new and unused in its box.  What would I get extra beyond what the Typ 020 provides me?

nothing.  They are completely different animals.  The digital 020 takes the live signal from the sensor and displays it on its viewfinder (instead of the rear live view screen)..  It includes a display of shooting settings.   The old visoflex ll or lll  is for non electronic bodies. It is  heavy and cumbersome.

Don't be negatively swayed by the reports of exploding Visoflex 020. I'm suspicious of that report simply because the image showing the parts suggests that the user forced the item apart.  It cannot fall apart and there are no screws on the body.  Cleaning it wouldnt cause the plastic case to break into rough pieces. Solvent cleaners might cause the plastic case to melt but there is no sign of that!!!!   In reality, the 020 is  a very tough, lightweight and compact device which works with every lens of any make which is mounted on your M10 (even if the lens is mounted via an adaptor) .   It cant be easily dismantled.   It is most useful for viewing the complete field of view of lenses outside the range of frame lines provided on the M10.  Consider it a live view viewfinder for any Leica or non Leica lens you mount.

For example, 21mm or 135mm.  When shooting with those lenses your normal on-camera viewfinder cannot show what is going to be in the frame. (you could use your rear live view screen but that might be inconvenient.)

I've owned mine for three years without problems.

The visoflex 020 is really worth the money, no sense to compare it with the old visoflex. If you do not own an SL and you don’t want that, it’s still a good solution for R lenses. Only with the 180 and longer I found it less ideal with the weight balance, but still doable.
