Hey everybody,

I would like to get a Super-Elmar 21 and I have a question regarding the start of production. If I remember correctly, then there was a problem that needed to be fixed. Do you remember what it was about? I tried to find information without success. Is it a thing that should be checked when buying a second hand lens? I think Leica will no longer agree to fix it for free.

Thanks for help,

Arto

Hi

I was one of the first customers in Norway to receive a copy when this lens was released. I had had it a week or so when Lieca store recalled it without any explenation. Never got it back, moneys refunded after about 6 months...

I then ¨ learned¨ that the ¨problem¨ was too thin walls in the focussing tube causing potentially variable resistance when barrel  ¨squeezed¨ during focussing. During my one week of ownership I did not notice anything.

I guess Leica succeded in recalling most copies, however, the faulty lens can be identified by having a thinner focussing barrel/tube (I refer to the tube were the number 21 is seen...) than the current one, the current one having a bit more belly-like or wider focussing tube.

Probably a collectibles today...

Don't worry it must cost a small fortune as it is a collectible now. The one to look for is at right below.

How come the right one still has screw threads on top barrel left and right, but not all the way around?

Both pics are from Leica. Mere P-shoping i guess.
