Red Dot Forum reports: "Over the past year, the relationship between the US Dollar and Euro has suffered and we have absorbed these costs. However, as this continues, we need to adjust our pricing in order to ensure pricing integrity across all Leica subsidiaries and to continue delivering the highest quality of products."

Appears to be across the board with bodies being hit the hardest. Goes into effect on April 1st 2021.

Coincidentally, now that I’m 2 weeks beyond my Covid vaccinations, daylight saving time has kicked in, and the weather forecast is favorable, yesterday I booked a rental of the M10 Monochrom for the coming weekend to compare to my M9 Monochrom.  If I see the value in switching, waiting another week would add $700 to the retail cost.  I had thought that prices might back off a bit if US tariffs are eliminated, but the weak dollar has pushed things in the opposite direction.

Used prices obviously depend on supply/demand, but some dealers like Leica Miami typically adjust used price inventory to retain trade values.  Different perspectives, depending on being a buyer or seller.  Currency fluctuations often lead to Leica price adjustments, so I wouldn't read too much into this, beyond what we already know to be difficult industry circumstances.

On 20/03/17 the US Dollar was 0.93 Euro, now it is 0.84 Euro. A decrease of more than 10%.

When the M10 Monochrom came to the US market with 8295 $ I was optimistic that it would be around 7500 Euro. No, it was 8200 Euro over here.

The price increase in the U.S. market is just an adjustment to the European prices. It should not be taken as a sign for the development in Europe.

Well, I had hoped to take longer, in deciding whether to buy an M10 Monochrom in 2021. Now, I have just two weeks in which to decide, and act. Notably, the funds that will enable me to buy, will arrive on the final business day of March, so, that means buying two weeks from today, or paying a higher price, later. This is a bit inconvenient, for me, but, I do understand the reason why Leica needs to do this, and appreciate the two weeks’ notice. Hopefully, if I do decide to buy on March 31st, there will be available stock.

Regardless, this is a beautiful day, the end of the worst of the pandemic is in sight, and I have M10 and Type 246 Leica cameras. Life is good.

I might rather buy a lens, instead of a camera body, and it is good to see that the prices of the lenses, being considered, are only $100 US, or zero.

Bummer, but it did wipe my Catholic guilt clean for buying the M10M recently haha. Fortunately most of the core M lens aren’t taking too drastic of a hit.

Gosh, I hope that works. It's Lent. I have been on an unexpected tear at the Leica Store. Just yesterday, I took the M10M out for a walk and told myself I would wait because there are other aspects of newly acquired gear and lenses that I must explore. But I just caved on the M10M after learning of the price increase. Between that and the SL2, I am focusing on how much I saved by not waiting another couple months... 🙏

Since I own an M10 (and played with an M10-P) in addition to the M9 Monochrom, I already appreciate the many advantages of the M10 platform (VF improvements, quiet shutter, slimmer profile, more robust build and better weather sealing, etc).  The rental is more about the files, the editing workflow and the translation to my typically modest print sizes. Can’t share my prints here, and I don’t see the value of compressed screen shots in any case, let alone pics made for testing purposes.

I mainly want to experience the camera and see what the fuss is about, on a practical level, given that the primary benefit of using a Monochrom camera for me is the all -b/w workflow and mindset it provides.  The M9M already does that for me, but in a less than ideal package. I’ll either be moved to switch, or content to carry on as is.  The cost won’t be the driver or constraint, but it is amusing that I decided to give it a whirl the day before a price increase was announced.

Price increases are very simple. Pay them or don’t.

True.

As the saying goes, "We don't have to like it - we just have to do it."

That said - for some Leica lovers, funding the purchase of an $8000+ lens or body isn't always easy - yet we still find a way to do it.  I'm in that demographic.  I find it  an infinitely preferable place to be than to be a part of the childish mob who throw tantrums of hatred at Leica because of their prices.

As Hugh over at Three Blind Men and An Elephant says, "I don't begrudge Leica their pricing."  Neither do I.

That's not to say that Leica's price structure is not daunting at times...

My rationalization for acquiring Leica gear is simple - I am a simple guy, rarely eat outside, drive a 12 year old Infiniti G35x and wear the same clothes that I bought 10 years ago. With that in mind, I am ok justifying $8,000 for a camera and $8,000 for a lens 😁

As an aside, whenever I discuss selling some of my Leica lenses with my high-schooler daughter she gets upset. I have been "warned" not to sell any Leica lens. This is from a kid who lives in the Apple ecosystem.
