My suggestion..

Clever, but at this point, you might as well get a an elmarit and benefit of two extra stops of light with the same overall size!

Sure, and even more so if you use the OEM lens hood........Luckily I have both 28's, but so far I do like the Summaron a lot, if only for the camera handling / balance sans pare-soleil.

But I didn't want an Elmarit.

I know you've had it for little time, but what are you opinion of one vs the other, especially when it comes to rendering ?

Steven, the best way is to try by yourself, other's opinions can not replace that.

The two 28mm lenses from Leica are as different as possible, also with other 28mm (same f:1.4 or 2 and so on ).

I have the Elmarit-M asph. 28mm, small and very good lens for various situations, nothing to complain.

I use it along other 28mm of different types and I think it really shines even in front of the bigger Summicron-M 28 which I use when light is scarcer.

When the 28mm Summaron-M came I didn't need it but wanted the LTM 2.8cm ( in good shape ! ) version for long, so I gave it a try.

I don't regret my choice, but the Summaron-M 28mm doesn't "replace" the other, just another " rendering in my palettes " which can not be compared to none.

...

Very nice lens to have and use...

So Peter, you bought from Regis in Corsica ?

I'm not sure that I'm the right person to ask about how a lens renders on an M to be honest Steven, honestly I don't I look too hard at all of that. My first priority has always been how any lens balances on a rangefinder, ( I include my excellent and oft' ignored by many the VC Bessa RF cameras too ). For me shooting with an M is really akin to "reportage" and in that field it's the "moment" that matters most not how any particular lens resolves an image. I know you know what I mean.

If you asked me the same of Cine lenses, that yes there I do care a lot as to how a lens renders, motion makes a huge difference, ( I've always loved Cookes and I still have a couple of sets working for my "retreat" in NYC ), but for still work primarily it's how a lens physically handles on an M that floats my boat. There are so many great lenses for the M system, Leica and otherwise, we are really spoilt for choice and for me it's hard to say one is better than another.

I do like very much the size of the Summaron that's for sure, I wish I could have found and then afforded one of the rare black versions, but I'm happy that I couldn't because I'm certain that would have been going for "collectors" money! I haven't really given the lens a good outing yet either. Tried it first on my M10-P, ( are you back in the M10-R fold now by the way? ), and as of today it's mounted on the M10-M which I suspect it's "old world" characteristics are going to suit better in B&W rather than colour. I'll also try it out too on my M9M before that disappears to SA to see if there's any differences in the look between the two sensor types, I suspect there might be.

So, a long reply to say nothing I guess...........but I'll report back after I get some images with the Summaron that I like, if I do............

No, the Summaron definately has its own character. Quite a few good 28mm RF lens options to enjoy 🙂

Further skiing off road: has anyone any experience of how this lens performs on APS-c? I'd love to use this lens on an M10m, and may take the plunge, but I know from experience that I won't be able to see the 28mm framelines when wearing spectacles. Currently using, and enjoying X-P3.

Difficult to have only one opinion 😉.

Most of the lens's character at border would be lost or gained depending on the subject and one's taste.

Never tried it myself on smaller sensor than M8, APS-H ,

I do love the rendering of the older "same optic" lens in LTM 2.8cm on M8.

Some years ago, LTM 5.6/2.8cm on M8
