Felt Cover inside Lens Cap

The felt covering inside my Q2 Lens Cap has disintegrated within months and now the cap is loose and keeps falling off.

Anybody else also experiencing the same?

Any solutions?

The Q and Q2 lens caps (for that matter, all  the "slipover" lens caps Leica has used over the years) are subject to falling off, often to be lost.  I even had it happen on a 500 mm mirror Leitz lens.  As a temporary solution try putting some pieces of gaffers tape (duct tape) on the inside rim of the cap.  There are about a dozen different 3rd party replacement caps that forum members use and like.  My favorite is about the same price as a Leica replacement and comes with a red lanyard.  I swore I'd never use a lens cap lanyard, but this has been working out well for me.  Lens Cap LC-SR-01 for Leica Q and Q2 by Match Technical - Leica Store Miami  I feared the dangling cap would get in my way, but after using my Q with it daily for over a year I can attest that it never got in the way when shooting, and I never lost it.  I even like how it looks on the camera.

 I left the metal cap in the box and use this from eBay. it works well and is cheaper and more robust in the field.

i've detested those things for over 5 decades now and first thing i did was put it back in the leica box and use a 3rd-party hood and a filter and a pinch lens cap. i've never seen a felt cap from any manufacturer last through very many cycles of removal and replacement. /guy

Hello Everybody,

I have always thought of the "slip over caps" as lens storage caps for lenses not currently being used. Not as caps to be used while going out & taking pictures. Even though the brown Hungarian yak felt lined metal cap stays on reasonably well & the red felt lined metal cap stays on even better.

I'm considering replacing my lens cap too. Any users of the Rubber Match Technical cap feel it's a worthy replacement?
They are a pricey piece of rubber.
I've read a couple of remarks from some Match Technical users that say that the rubber actually "attracts" dust to itself,
curious if anyone here has had that experience?

The Leather units (@ newtoleica) from China do look intriguing.

The Op-tech hood hat Mini is perfect. Used it on Q and Q2 - slightly more snug fit on the Q2 as I think the lens diameter is marginally greater. Doesn't slip off and just pull it off and scrunch it in your pocket. I hate dangly things!! 😬

I've not noticed the dust attraction issue, and I almost always have the camera with me.

I never use a lens cap. The original felt lined is still in the box. Pristine. 

I’ve just never seen the need. I do use a UV filter or a CPL so the front element is protected. The hood does a great job IMHO. 

My Q2 is either on a strap around my neck with the camera body at my side with my hand on or near it for protection or it’s in a well padded bag.

My lens cap lives on the camera (over the hood) when the camera is stored in the bag.   When the camera comes out of the bag the lens cap doesn't.  It stays in the bottom of the bag until it is time to put the camera away.   I don't worry about loose or lost lens caps.  If one should happen to fall off it will fall off inside the camera bag.

That isn't something specific to the Q.  I do that for all may cameras save my old Mamiya RB67 which is too big for a camera bag.

My bag has one padded area I keep the Q2. Nothing encroaches on that so I never worry about anything rattling around with the camera. It works for me. 
 

On my Canon R5 I usually flip the hood around when in the bag because generally it’s too long. In that case I keep a cap on it until I pull it out. Then the cap stays in the bag.

Mine has been replaced twice by Leica, the first time when hardly used. That never happened with my 1960s 50mm Summicron cap.

+1 for what Stu says. Despite my initial misgivings about the Match Technical cap, I now consider it indispensable. Fits well, made well, stays put until you want to take it off and can't be lost.

I bought one of these Match Technical rubber caps for my Q and started using it on my Q2M recently. Yes, they do collect dust, at least mine did. But it's rubber, so take it to the water faucet, run some warm water over it and vigorously wash it off with your fingers, using no soap and it cleans off perfectly. Don't dry it with a lint covered cloth. I just shake it off well, set it aside and air dry it. Each time I've done that it seems to attract less and less dust over time.

The Leica Q2 Lens cap is the worst, most poorly thought out thing about the camera - which I otherwise love. The pointy edges of the hood eventually push in and tear out the thin felt cap lining. Today, my cap fell off in a field, but amazingly, I found it. But I gotta do something to replace the lining. This design is very flawed.

I bought and used the Leather Q Cap that is available on-line and seen here on this thread and it's a good and sturdy cap but when I found the
Otect Lens cover made for the Q cameras, I ordered it and switched to using it exclusively on my Q2. These are Very well made, fit perfectly
and stay put until You want to remove it. I have to give it a big thumbs up as it is a very nicely designed and purpose built part.
