Anyone got any experience of the 21 summilux vs the CV 21 1.4?

Yes I used the CV 21.f1.4 for a few years and found it to be a great performer.............I have only tried out the Summilux at a Leica store a couple of times but could not justify it's cost or weight.

However I sold the CV 21mm because of it's size and weight, and too because 21mm isn't on my list of favourite FL's, but subsequently I did buy a Color Skopar 21mm and I've been happy enough with that lens, in fact it's pretty damn good, small and very light weight too..........But when I compared the CV 21 and the 'Lux 21 I couldn't see the justification to spend so much more on the 'Lux, image-wise I saw little between the two lenses. I also felt that the CV handled better.

Thanks @Smudgerer I’m just a sucker for the cognitively dissonant combination of wide angle and shallow DOF. I’ve got a 21 SEM which I’m using a lot eg 21, 35, 75 and I keep wondering!

what I’m trying to do is keep the £ down if the image quality between the two 21’s at 1.4 was very similar. Due to being a non core lens it would be second hand. Also slightly driven by my summilux 28mm 1.4 having left for a very long holiday in Wetzlar.

Right, I gave up the thoughts of a Summilux 21 for reasons already mentioned, got the CV 21 1.4 that I liked in pretty much all respects except size and weight, so sold that.....then got the Leica 21 SEM which is a great lens for sure, compact too, but it sat unused for a couple of years which was stupid so I sold that for good €€€ and got the 21 Color Skopar so as to have a 21mm should I ever need / want to use one. That too hasn't gone out much so I guess 21mm isn't one of my chosen FL's!.............But the results from the 21 Color Skopar are quite surprising, and in a good way, so I'll keep that 21 and probably let it sit in the gear safe in the dark until I ever feel the need for the wider than 24mm FL, ( which I do like ).

PS. Yes I know the SEM is slow at 3.4 but with the M10's and now the M11's the usable ASA range really negates the need for a fast lens to a large degree, and frankly if bokeh is your thing you are not going to see much of that in most 21mm/fast lens shots unless you are shooting close-ups..........With the 21 SEM I think you've got perhaps the best 21mm W/A out there, and it's compact on camera too, if you like that lens I'd draw the 21mm line there to be honest.

I performed an informal test between 21 Lux and the Voigtlander CV21 1.4. Camera used is M9-P.

Granted, the framing is slightly different for both images but I could still notice subtle differences in color and contrast. Both images were converted from DNG straight from LR without adding contrast / sharpening / color etc.

Leica 21 Lux

CV 21 1.4

the rendering is very similar and VM 21 f/1.4 has  a bit higher contrast at centre.

VM 21 f/1.4 has good performance if someone needs f/1.4 for very wide angle lens.

My observation is that the out of focus shelf behind the NETS machine is more contrasty for the Leica. Of cos one could postprocess to increase that parameter, so the VM presents an excellent value for money proposition.

Hence, why would one spend the money on Leica when the VM is cost a small fraction of that amount? Personally, I have actually shot close up portraits before using these 2 lenses side by side. My conclusion is that the Lux rendered skin colors and tones in a way similar to the 0.95 Noctilux (ie flattering way). The VM on the other hand owing to its high subject contrast, revealed too much flaws of the skin, which is akin to adding too much contrast and clarity slider in LR. IMO, one can add contrast to a less contrast situation, but it is more difficult to get less contrast from a more contrasty situation. You can make the Leica have more contrast like VM, but you may not be able to make the VM look like the Leica.

But is the Leica really worth so many times more? absolutely not, IMO. However, if you could get a good copy of the Leica in used market, the price is actually quite reasonable. In my location, a good used copy of 21 Lux can be had for USD$3750, while a brand new is $9000. (For reference, the VM 21 1.4 used is $650).

For me, I’ve tried and since sold both lenses as many of you had mentioned, it was not used frequently enough, bulky, and used for novelty factor. End of the day I can only keep practical lenses which I use more (35mm and 50mm).
