After using 35 mm Summicrons for over 50 years and a type IV for the last 25, I decided to shake things up a bit. I traded my trusty Type IV for a 28 Elmarit Asph. Why? Well it is the same size and weight as my old Type IV, and — since trading my Monochrom for a SL — I noticed I was hardly using my 50 Summicron. Like almost never. It was time to see the world through different eyes.

It has only been a few days since mounting the 28 on my M10 and the lens feels right. Here are a few of the highlights:

The size is perfect. As a walk around/travel lens you really couldn't ask for more.

The color rendition is wonderful. Rich and warm but still Leica like.

The added contrast gives a 3D like pop. The files look sharp, even those shot a 1/15.

About the only minus is seeing the frame lines takes a bit more effort... And it is not a Summicron. Oh well, I still have my 50 and 75 Summicrons. And if I find myself missing a 35, there is always the rumored 35 APO Summicron in a year or so.

Hi and thanks!

Maybe I do not read thoroughly enough, but what IV did you trade in? Must be the 35 cron IV or...?

If so... (and besides 35mm being very different from 28mm), I find this to be a very big jump. I find the 35 cron IV and the 28 asph being among the bigger opposites in the Leica range when it comes to rendering. I myself just love the 35 IV.

That said; those pics have a really nice look! However, from my experience with the 28 asph this look do not entirely come from the lens or...?

Yes, I traded my 35 mm Summicron IV. My walkabout kit was 35 and 75 Summicrons for the last decade. This combo was so easy it made me lazy. The 35 became a lift and click. Framing was too easy. The same became true for the 75 which seemed to be becoming a tight 50.

When I traded my Monochrom for a SL, my 75 seemed to become permanently mounted on the SL and my 50, which always lived on my Monochrom, sat unused. I thought by going with a 28/50/135 kit, I would be forced to see the world differently. When using this kit, I reach for the 28 when a landscape presents itself. Reaching for the 50 requires stepping in closer for portraits, which is a good thing. And reaching for the 135 means I can not walk in any closer.

This kit is small and light. Each lens uses a 39 mm filter. And this kit requires a slight change in how I see the world.

Hi and thanks

I nice kind of self-imposed challenge. I get the idea and like it!... Even if I would have kept the IV still... 👍
