I use an SL (601) mainly for B&W photographs, both Raw and Jpeg.  Is there any sign that the SL2S would give me an improved B&W image over what I have at the moment?  From what I can see, the majority of comments deal with colour and noise at different ISO settings.  Advice would be welcomed.

Consensus seems to be improved high ISO, improved color (especially at high ISO), improved AF, IBIS, and possibly improved handling (subjective).

The high ISO, AF, and IBIS would be worthwhile to me for B&W shooting.

Hi,

I really like the results. Both, converted in RAW but also the Jpegs are fine for a fast solution. I've adjusted one Profile to Jpeg B&W with Sharpness and Contrast both to +1 - as a quick solution.

Attached one quickly converted from Raw with some adjustments (Cow 75mm f2) and one directly out of camera without any further adjustments (Iso6400, 35mm sl f2, a bit dark, but was just a test shot when adjusting the profiles ;) )

I’m debating right now shooting B&W on my SL2-S or get a M10M so I can change lens.  I have the Q2M, but am limited to 28mm.  The tonal range in the grays are hard to beat on the Q2M however so I’m leaning towards getting a M10M.

I'd give the SL2-S a good shot at it. It's such a nice companion to the Q2M - similar overall operation and menus but with more robust features and settings. The SL2-S will open up the use of R and L mount lenses in addition to M mount. I have yet to do much conversion with the SL2-S (it's new to me and I'm still on a honeymoon with my Q2M) but I think the versatility of its noise management at high ISOs will translate well in monochrome image development.

The SL2-S is capable of producing excellent black & white photographs. I’m not lucky enough to have used the Q2M or the M Monochrom - I’d love to, I’m sure they are absolutely fantastic - but I do know that you can achieve great monochrome tones and textures with the SL2-S under most conditions. And, as Alan Friedman says above, the sensor’s handling of low light lends itself really well to black & white.
This is only a casual snap (a pontificating mate of mine on a lads drinking session 😂) but it was taken in poor light: SL2-S, Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN i Contemporary; f2, 1/125, iso 6400.
Adapted M Lenses or the new Sigma primes can also help tremendously with the handling of SL cameras for candid & street type work. Size and weight needn’t be an issue these days with an SL.

Agree with Alan & Chris. Lately I've been using the SL2-S & SL2 more & more for B&W photography. I still love using my reincarnated Monochrom1 (now on its 3rd sensor), however the SL2s are right up there & producing some excellent B&W images.

Superb photographs Mike. The look on the little lad’s face, kicking up sand, brilliant. Great detail and tones on those elephants, and their pose and faces are beautiful to see.

Again, excellent. I envy you that 50 Summilux! 😂. And showing what the original SL can do at night as well!

I haven’t used the SL 601 but the dynamic range at ISO 50 on the original SL is similar but about 1/2 stop lower than the SL2-S at ISO 100.

The SL2-S is very good at ISO 100 for high contrast scenes and works great for B&W. You can see the snow texture and the details in the trees in the shot below, taken at ISO 100 w/ 16-35 SL.

Do you currently experience banding, posterization, or other artifacts with your 601 when editing a blue sky to look almost black with the blue/cyan sliders? Do you raise your shadows so far sometimes that they turn to burnt toast? Do you find yourself limited by its highlight recovery? SL2-S can help with that. Otherwise the benefits fall outside the realm of b&w IQ.

The OP posted this 14 months ago and has one other forum post in the interim, unrelated to this.
