I’m new to Leica and just bought a Leica M3 double stroke. It has a collapsable Summicron f2 50mm lens attached. I’m looking for help with the size cover for the back of the lens, front cover size, and the size case used to hold the lens...and where to purchase these items (besides eBay).

Also, what size is the body cover for the M3? I’m shipping the camera and lens to be CLA’d and would like to detach the lens for shipping and cover the camera opening.

Looking for original Leica M3 parts, so vintage Leica vs newer parts. Did not know the size of the lens caps (front and rear) in mm sizes. Typically see original silver lens caps for sale in 39mm size, but I don’t know if that is correct for my lens and if the size cap for the rear of the lens is a different size.

For cases, was looking for the bubble type if they made it for the 1955 lens and/or the leather tube type case.

For the body cap, I think this was black and originally black painted brass cap, not sure what the original cap was made of or size for the M3.

I followed the same route after buying my first M3, and over the years searched for the same accessories. Since then I have accumulated some extra caps (lens and body) of the correct vintage, M cases, and maybe an extra lens case or two. eBay and dealer prices for genuine Leica accessories can be all over the map, from reasonable to "I don't expect to sell, but will ask a wild price anyway". The original poster could contact me and perhaps I can assist with some items. Leitz filters are also useful ... especially for use with B&W film.

if you are new to Leica, and start with a M3 Double Stroke + Summicron collapsible.. you're on the right track 😎 ... so is appreciable that you search for original and possibly time-consistent accessories... 😉 . So let's speak of CAPS :

Lens cap - front : the one you show on your pics is definitely the right one - metal with felt strip inside : it's usually named as "E39" which is the filter size, but all E39 lenses of the first generation had also the same front ring size, so that there was this "E 39 standard lens cap" (sometimes referred to also as "42mm front cap" - diameter of the external front ring) code is 14031, formerly ORQDO  (if you pursue collecting Leiz, will start soon to enter the complex world of "Leitz product codes" 😄 - at M3 times, finished in silver - easy to find also the original

Lens cap - back : at M3 times it was code 14051 former IZQOO :the standard one has "Leitz" on the back side... it exists also a slimmer variant (see picture, don't know if has the same code... is rather uncommon) ; the "modern" one is 14269 which didn't exist at the time of your Summicron. 14051 is easy to find, often worn in the plastic engages for M bayonet (I have some which, when mounted, "rotate freely")

Body cap it's of 2 kinds :plastic+metal (at M3 times, it was this one) code 14056/IVZOO ; then all plastic (current);  14056 has some variants (see under) but the right for a silver M3 is the one with silver metal bayonet : easy to find , must have "Leica" classic writing in front. The all plastic (14195 - "leica" in front) has many 3rd party copies.

and finally the case (a Summicron deserves it... 😎) : there are two, quite different... of course better to have BOTH... 😄 one for storage - the other for carrying

- Plastic -transparent : code 14601 former POLWO - easy to find (other codes for other sizes - focals)

- Leather : I haven't one... I display the equivalent (same style-material) for 90mm "slim" lenses : maybe (not sure) the version for Summicron 50 has not the capabilty to have a carrying strap ( which can be inserted in the one I display) : code of the version for Summicron : 14565 former ETBIX. Not easy to find, I suspect, though never searched seriously for.

There are three types you could look for. The black plastic base for the clear plastic one was made in both screw and M bayonet fit, so if you are looking at one to buy check that it is the one that matches your lens.

Thanks for those pictures. I’ve seen some containers like that on eBay, but they are not lens specific, meaning the sellers don’t tell you what lens they will hold, just provide dimensions (sometimes:). I think I would need a bubble container 2in wide x 2in high, something like that. For the leather lens containers, since they will need to hold the lens with the base cap attached, guessing that that type will need to be wider (2.5in wide or 3in wide)?

I also searched by the specific product codes but did not get results on eBay like with caps, so sellers don’t seem to use them for the bubble and leather lens containers like they do with the lens caps. Is there a store or seller that has these vintage parts? I found some at Roberts camera, wonder if you have found a list of vintage sellers other than those mainly selling cameras (like KEH).

Yes, all three types of container were/are made in various sizes. The leather ones are the tightest fit even for the lenses they are intended for. The modern soft black ones have foam pads top and bottom which takes up some space that is not obvious looking at the outside, but the foam holds the lens nicely if it is the right size. This UK dealer has several of the soft black ones for sale
