Hello!  I have emailed the seller, but figured I would check with everyone here to see what their opinion is.

Received a nice condition 262 from a Leica Store, but I noticed there's an oddity with it.  Where the "focus button" is on the M240, there's a clear half circle protrusion in the covering.  I have not noticed this on the M262s I have looked at, and this was hard to see in the pictures in the listing so I didn't notice it until I received the camera.  Managed to get a shot of it from an angle that makes it more visible.  Since the location is where the focus button would be on an M240, is it just some metal cover for the button hole in the body (assuming they used the same body on the 262) that's protruding a bit?

Thanks!

I tried smoothing it out but it feels like there's a slightly raised half circle underneath.  This does not feel normal.  If it was just a crease in the cover I'd be fine with it, but since it's a half circle in the exact spot where you'd have a button on an M240 it feels like something isn't quite right underneath.

It is a visible defect.  I'd have a chat with the seller.  Someone made a booboo.

Well, I have requested a return and since I am in the EU and bought from a business this should not be a problem.  Will just have to look for another 262.  The listing had some pictures where you could tell it was there if you knew what to look for, but in the description of condition the only thing mentioned was light wear on the bottom cover...

I feel that this defect/flaw should have been made clear by the seller and it was not.  Too bad since I was looking forward to having a Leica Store purchase with warranty and figured it would mean no hassle/problems.

I am cynical enough to wonder if they did not disclose this obvious defect what less obvious defect might also be there, unreported?  What did they say when you spoke with them?

I suppose its a defect, though it appears to have no impact on functionality and little cosmetic effect. But unless it was sold as a brand new item direct from the manufacturer, it's worth considering whether the price you paid for it makes it acceptable or not. It looks like a manufacturing defect, as if some foreign object got stuck under the skin as it was attached. I'd hazard a guess it's a piece of card or paper, perhaps circular, that stuck to the leather sheet and was sliced in two by the machine cutting the sheet.

We'll never know.

They have yet to respond, but I can't imagine them being stubborn/dumb enough to try to fight a return that is covered under EU consumer laws.

Yeah, short of peeling off the covering there's no way to tell.  But since it looks to be exactly where the focus button is on an M240 body, my guess is that they use the same body shell and just put a half circle shaped metal cover over the hole.  Perhaps this has come loose somehow.

I can't imagine the original purchaser accepting this defect in a brand new camera so my guess it that it has developed over time.  My concern is that perhaps moisture or something might be involved, which causes me to wonder if there are other hidden issues.

One of the problems with buying used stuff from a dealer or privately is that you don’t know the history of the item and the seller often doesn’t know either.

A fault like this might simply be down to poor quality control from the outset or it might be a symptom or legacy of something else that has happened.  I wouldn’t keep the camera, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a better example.

Well, this was "inspected by Leica technicians" and from an official Leica store so I honestly did not expect any issues.  Let's hope for a hassle free return, I have already started looking at other 262s...

Half looking for an M262.  Don't think this would have bothered me.  Had to look at photo carefully to see the half moon - obvious once spotted though!

Well this one will probably become available again so feel free to purchase it at that point. 🙂  I don't mind cosmetic issues but am concerned there might be something underlying (quite literally) that's indicative of other problems.

It did not leave the factory with the semi-circular ridge.  Something went awry since when that 262 was new and it was not disclosed.  I would have felt differently if the vendor had disclosed this fault but he did not. And it is not like the flaw is hidden.  It is obvious. On that basis I would regard anything he did as tainted.  There are plenty of places to buy a Leica. I think you acted prudently.

Well, the dealer replied and said the would take it back no questions asked, and were very apologetic about not describing this flaw in the for sale listing.  They have a good reputation from what I've been able to find so I will take their word for it being a mistake.  I have a UPS return shipping label here now so will drop it off tomorrow.

They did offer me a significant discount on a used MP240 they have as an apology for the issue I had so will have to think that over.

Sounds like a good idea to me, too.

Well, I did just that, so hopefully I will be happier with this one.  Black with some light brassing, looks well taken care of.  Should be here late this week or early next so will report back!
