Hello:
The TL 55-135 lens is the one I like the most for its size and weight, but its high price sets me back and on Ebay (used) it still keeps its price high.

I have looked for an equivalent at least in its highest range, such as 135mm and similar in size and weight to the 55-135, to fit well in my little carry bag.

In my TL2 it will look like this .....:

I think it's from 1973.
I'm testing it, I'll upload photos, the ad said I have a 12-month warranty and 30 days to return it and the price is quite affordable.

I just bought a 1966 135 Tele Elmar, the lens is excellent on all 3 of my Leicas, CL, M3, M8. I find I am using it a lot, right now. I cover the 55-135 range with several lenses, 55 f1.4 7Artisans, 90 Elmarit, a 105 Micro Nikkor, and the Tele Elmar. I also have a 65 Elmar,  that I have fiddled with extension tubes for it to work on the CL, it is a nice focal length on the CL but the 55 is a better lens. The 135 and 65 were both surprise bids on Ebay, got them both for very low bids.

I do not rule out the idea of buying the 55-135 (L) one day, my thought is to cover the maximum possible range with the fewest possible targets. Fixed lenses are said to provide better quality images, although the type of photography I practice with the naked eye makes that difference very difficult to detect.

I also have M8 and I want to test with the 2 cameras (TL2 and M8) and observe differences.

I hope you enjoy that newly acquired 135mm and we can share criteria and experiences.

Greetings

IMO .. The 55-135 leica is a great option for general photography. .. You can grab one used for around $1200- 1500.. they do hold their value.  If you want real  wildlfe, birding, etc.  best to get at least 300mm for your crop sensor.  With that being said,  my travel tele is a Leica 55-135 - very good all the way out!  The good news about the TL2 and CL is 24 meg resolution..  I can usually crop to 100% to enhance my tele shots.

Costa Rica Iquana  TL2 / 55-135.

Cheers,

Rick

Excelente imagen ..
Bien enfocado y hermosos colores.

For now, a 135mm telephoto lens that in TL2 would be 202mm is enough, for lengths I have thought of other alternatives.

Dopaco,

Please share some images from the 135 Tele Elmar when you can. It has always been on my list.

Thanks,

Rick

Rick,

I picked the 135 Tele Elmar up from Ebay, the seller really down played the lens, I bid $150 for it and got it for $113. I was surprisedwhan I got the lens, really not in bad shape at all, certainly not mint but boardering on excellent. Anyway decided to send it out with my M3 which needed shutter brake work. Got it back $75 CLA from Youxin Yee. The images have been excellent, my best picture yet was with my M8, clouds over a 3800 ft mountain we see from our area, I get a real 3D feeling withntyhis lens.

TL2 + Tele-Elmar 135-F 4.
Photo of this macro practicing today.

I saw a group of dried thistles and photographed them, photo taken freehand and at a minimum distance of 1.5 meters. (Approximately).

Focus (by eye) without assistance.

Freehand focus is sometimes difficult to grasp and the slightest movement becomes blurry. I do not know if it is normal, or it is a defect of the Lens, I have to continue testing in case it needs any repair. (I have 12 months warranty).

Rick:

I purchased a 135 f4 elmar (1961) for about $150 in great shape.  Here's a photo of the lens and a couple of images from the lens. They are around; check eBay.  Very lightweight, too.
