  • jaapv changed the title to External EVF for waist level work.

OVF, not EVG. It needs something to fill the gap between the hot shoe mount and the camera's view finder rubber ring. I use thick tape.

Does that work well enough? Tempted to see if I can modify one.

It works perfect.

There isn't much to modify, simply use a small piece of foam  tape like this.

https://www.instacart.com/landing?product_id=336235&retailer_id=1487&region_id=32083604724&utm_medium=sem_shopping&utm_source=instacart_google&utm_campaign=ad_demand_shopping_bananas_sfbay_rp&utm_content=accountid-6180870146_campaignid-10879696050_adgroupid-111007165670_device-c&gclid=CjwKCAiAo5qABhBdEiwAOtGmbrCK7InjJkMw_gAUC7hDOoglnihyLZ1a1EBmT4xwfFpplqo88f0guBoCb9oQAvD_BwE

By the way, it may have the illusion that the hot shoe is barely attached. No. It is very firm. This Leica angle finder (used for R) is about $15~50.

Before this, I have tried to add a small piece of steel (instead of foam tape) under the original "tongue" to extend the tongue so that it can be fully inserted into the hot shoe. But then found the new way is much better.

Yeah, they didnt have any in stock when I emailed them. It was a limited run. Seems it’s back. But $425 plus shipping plus tax. I could buy another lens :)

Not 100% certain but I believe the item that was out of stock at Leica Miami is actually made by company based in Germany:

Since you appear to be based in UK you might want to contact them directly. Not sure if price would be any better.

It appears that this right angle finder is made for the SL: Leica Miami Used Equipment

It looks different from the one shown by Einst-Stein.

Go to ebay. There are tons of cheaper ones .
You want  one made of steel, not  gold :)

Also watch the midel number. You want 14287, not 14300.

The one from Miami is indeed not by Leica. I’ve heard the problem with it, besides the price, is the optical quality.

The old and cheap 14287 by Leica is the one to go.

The price is certainly high. I can't comment on the quality. The Leica Miami guys seem generally well informed and carry good gear but maybe the decided to carry it since there are so few options out there.

What puzzles me is why Leica hasn't produced a high quality one themselves. With all the criticism that has been leveled at the SL over the last 5 years for not having an articulating screen it would be a good way to address the issue in the short run.

It would buy Leica time until they can deliver an articulating screen that meets their exacting design and quality standards. An interim solution would appear all the more important when Leica is releasing cameras like SL2-s, with far more capable video where this functionality is a "must have" not a nice to have.

SL is heavy, not suitable to handle one handed. I don’t find waste level flipping LCD practical.

Eye level angle finder is another story. The old cheap 14287 works very well. Why bother?

Mine arrived. I bought a different model number but it works so well! My tape to help make the pad isn’t here and I’d like more than 1/2mm of hot shoe contact, but putting the image into 1:1 and waist shooting like this is so much fun! Wow.

Ill be sure to post images. With the 85mm this low angle will make for interesting street work.

For quick and dirty, simply tape anything as the spacer, such as a  small piece of bubble gum. :) (Yaak)
