BBHewee Posted December 30, 2020 Share #1 Posted December 30, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I’m thinking of ditching a MATE and a 35 Lux (which would be replaced by a Cron) for a Q2. I currently shoot with an M10. My thought is that since I’ve had children, I haven’t had the time to go out and shoot as much as I used to. And I’d like something that I can take to shoot street but that my wife could pick up and shoot family with... The Q files cropped to 35 still offer more pixels than the M10, and the character of that Q lens is lovely to me, and would cover most of the MATE. Am I crazy? Advertisement Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Hi BBHewee, Take a look here Ditching M lenses for a Q2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted December 30, 2020 Share #2 Posted December 30, 2020 No, you are not. But what have pixels to do with it? You are talking about the suitability of different camera concepts for your intended use.
BBHewee Posted December 30, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted December 30, 2020 I thought the crops on the old q were somewhat limited vs my 240 at the time. Not so much on the Q2.
otto.f Posted December 30, 2020 Share #4 Posted December 30, 2020 (edited) I would see myself as crazy indeed if I would do what you’re thinking of. I would never want to miss the variety of character in M lenses. My wife would, with all respect, not be worth the price of a Q2, chances are fat she will be happier with her iPhone 12, the Q2 is too big for her, her iPhone produces marvelous images which are mostly presented and seen on screens via whatsapp. The other day I printed an iPhone 8 image in B&W on 24x30; perfect! Who wants more? We, Leica owners want more, not your wife and family. Edited December 30, 2020 by otto.f 1

Should your wife be a experienced photographer, well then i foresee some "discussions" who will use the camera.... Chris
BBHewee Posted December 31, 2020 Author Share #6 Posted December 31, 2020 All fair points. I’m thinking general usability though. My wife is worth a lot more than a Q2 btw. 😂 But in all seriousness the conversation is more to do with a rangefinder not being accessible to take a quick picture when needed, vs a Q2 that someone can pick up. ive started using the q2 and the ease of experience is refreshing.

stevej2001 Posted January 1, 2021 Share #8 Posted January 1, 2021 It's true that the Q isn't ideal for a casual photographer (I'm presuming the OP's wife isn't an avid photographer) but it would sure beat a rangefinder manual focus camera. The ability to crop either in the Q or in post does minimize the need for a zoom. Furthermore a zoom with reasonable image quality would be much bigger/heavier/intimidating. And a lot cheaper, of course.
T25UFO Posted January 1, 2021 Share #9 Posted January 1, 2021 I did something similar. I have an M10 Mono and was using this almost exclusively with the 50mm APO - the retro black chrome edition - a really lovely lens. I had a 24mm Elmarit and 35mm Summilux and decided to sell both to fund a Q2 Mono. A slight compromise - 24mm to 28mm - but the crop to 35mm is fine. I now have my ideal B&W combination and don’t have to swap lenses. The Q2 Mono is absolutely brilliant.
