Okay, I can’t figure it out from that manual (or searching the forum). How does one set AE lock to the back button?

I’m hoping for a simple press to lock, reframe, shutter press to focus and full press for shutter actuation. All the while, the AE remaining set. But, it’s not working...even with joystick customisation.

Just how stupid am I?

The manual describes how to do it for the joystick (see below). Is that what you mean?

Usually both lock functions (focusing and exposure) are done at the same time with the shutter button. You can, however, divide the lock functions between the shutter button and the joystick or assign both to the joystick. The functions include settings and storage.

It doesn’t seem to work this way. Assigning to the joystick doesn’t allow a simple press to lock the AE without also holding the shutter. Maybe I’m missing something fundamental but I’ve strictly followed the manual. Perhaps because I’m in Auto mode??

Sorry I forgot to add the right image. Try it with aperture priority or shutter priority and lets see

Try to also set joystick lock to On

Edit : Ignore that suggestion, it just locks the joystick so it cannot be used I think

What is your setting for Customize Control->Joystick (MF and AF)? What focusing mode are you using?

I think I got it

First of all this is what the manual says:

A metering memory lock doesn’t make much sense in conjunction with multi-field metering, because a targeted capture of an individual object element will not be possible.

So your exposure mode should not be multi-metering. Also it may be the case that your AF mode should not be face/person detection or whatever is called in SL2-S.

So try without those two and hold the joystick to lock the exposure

Interesting. So I’ve got it set to Spot Metering (tick) but also Face Detection (possible issue?). I’ll try in a different Focus mode.

So, it was indeed Face Detection focus mode that was preventing the functioning of AE-L on the joystick button. But, even moved to AF-S (or indeed MF) it still isn’t enabled with a single push to lock. The joystick needs to be held down until shutter actuation. That it can’t AE-L in Face Detect nor with a single press of the joystick is disappointing, frankly.

I agree. Yes the manual says you have to hold it down to keep the exposure locked, but honestly I could not find anywhere in the manual why the Face detect deactivates the exposure lock function. I guess the assumption is that if you want to detect faces, you also want to expose for them....

Yes: that does indeed make sense
