simon_hsn Posted December 10, 2020 Share #21 Posted December 10, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Did anyone get to download the new LUTs? The official download on the webpage is not possible at the moment. I would like to use it with my SL1. The log function for the SL1 has only been updated in the last year, so I am quite hopeful for it.

Jk1002 Posted December 11, 2020 Share #25 Posted December 11, 2020 I only have to to say I wished they would have released this one first. Now with lockdowns and whatnot I am sticking to my preloved SL and built up lenses. Cheers JK
robert_parker Posted December 11, 2020 Share #26 Posted December 11, 2020 (edited) I think the idea of a small lightweight camera with IBIS really has a lot of merits, particularly for street photography, travel, flexible work including video and very importantly for users of smaller, manual focus Leica lenses - it almost begins to have the look and feel of the old R line cameras but with the ability to take a wider range of lenses - I suppose the thing that really needs to be coming down the road to make this a true successor to the R series cameras and a really great success in its own right would be smaller, lightweight L mount lenses to go with the nicely accessible form factor. 🧐📸😈 Edited December 11, 2020 by robert_parker
OR120 Posted December 11, 2020 Share #27 Posted December 11, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would like to see another SL2 body - perhaps smaller without video. Just for stills. Drop the price another $1,200 or so. For me, not for others with video needs.

The data sheet on the previous page shows it to be exactly the same dimensions as the SL2 - and 15 grams heavier. Only thing smaller about the SL2-S is the sensor resolution. Not that I am complaining about that at all - lower res and higher ISO is right up my alley. Wish I could test-drive the SL2-S. I am not a fan of EVFs at all, but the 5.xx Mpixel screen might be enough to change my mind. I'll also be interested to see if the new sensor shows up in an M10-S eventually, or if Leica considers it too "video-oriented." I am very impressed that Leica was finally willing to go against the flow of more and more pixels. 👍 I've been waiting for that. I'd like to reward that outlook with some cash. But I'm going to see how things "develop" until after the holidays - look at some (more) picture examples, hear some user feedback. And maybe see if I can't wangle an opportunity to try it myself somehow.
Chuck Albertson Posted December 11, 2020 Share #30 Posted December 11, 2020 Does Leica still have that test drive offer they ran for the SL? I was also wondering when they plan to introduce the new prime SL lenses (21/24/28), as they seem to have disappeared from the company Web site.
Chaemono Posted December 11, 2020 Share #31 Posted December 11, 2020 Given that it is both, a video and a high ISO light sensitive stills camera, what I like about the price point is that one can buy it, use it for a while, and sell it with a “minimal” loss. I doubt that the resell value will be below $3,500 two years from now. Calculated as a monthly rental fee, it’s an attractive value proposition.
scott kirkpatrick Posted December 11, 2020 Share #32 Posted December 11, 2020 I did a little Googling to clarify the reasons for the 29 min 59 sec limit on video recording. I may not have got the full history (I think this protection for European manufacturers goes back to the VCR days), but -- The EU back in 2008 decided that if you can record video of LP 23 FPS or greater quality for 30 minutes or more you are a video camera and subject to a special duty on IMPORT to the EU. No such tax applies to export from the EU. -- In 2018, the import duty was reduced to zero. So this tax, now abandoned, was intended to extract a little revenue from Asian manufacturers of video gear (presumed to be professional stuff), leaving European consumers of still cameras untroubled by the extra costs. And it is now gone. Let's hope that the 30 minute limit is removed from the SL and SL2, which should never have been affected, as well in the near future. 2

To me, this looks like a simple refresh to the SL to make the product line cover a wider range of users without doing much extra development. -- new visual engineering effort confined to getting the color science right for the BSI technology, -- new mechanical engineering confined to getting the heat out for continuous video without losing the IBIS -- don't mess with the UI, offer initially what may actually be the same long list of codecs, and call on subcontractors or partners for the slick video editing tools that will come next year. Someone with overall responsibility for product development, initials SD, will probably look at the M10 lineup and see that this positioning has already been achieved with M10-R and M10-P, and leave it that way for a while. Manfred6 Posted December 11, 2020 Share #34 Posted December 11, 2020 The SL2 has in-body stabilisation." The native SL lenses might give the impression that it’s a cumbersome camera. But actually I find the balance, even with the huge 90-280, surprisingly good. And IBIS allows for steady handholding at slow speeds. I owned the R system, and I find the SL2 a worthy, and more flexible, successor. That said, I won’t be selling my M bodies as long as my vision cooperates. The RF is a different experience, and the M lenses are small jewels. I keep my M lenses on my M bodies, and my SL lenses on the SL2. Different tools and experiences for me. Much like when I used both R and M film systems. scott kirkpatrick Posted December 12, 2020 Share #39 Posted December 12, 2020 How do you load the LUTs on an SL[601]? Same question for an SL2 (or does the latest firmware already include them? I haven't worked with LUTs, and couldn't find any details in the SL2-S manual.

I think Leica is off to a promising start in that area. I am certain, ProResRaw support with the Ninja V will be available down the road. Good times ahead!
