Thanks for your contribution to what i happily (and blindly) considered a simple body feature. i.e. framelines.

The rangefinder of modern Ms is very similar to that of the M2 (the M3 rangefinder had a slightly different internal layout). There have been some improvements and other development done over the years, e.g. framelines have been added and DOF marks removed. Parallax compensation is still part of the mechanism, i.e. framelines move when focussing at shorter distances. There is, of course, no parallax in live view, because the live view image is produced through the lens.

I just purchased a used but mint m10- working perfectly: Except for the frame adjust lever. Just like the OP- When I lock on a new lens at times the frames are in a half/between position and I have to twiddle the preview lever to get them to settle into the correct position. Also if I use the lever itself at times it goes to that half position. It's like it's slightly sticky... I don't really mind as I hardly ever use the lever and twiddling it to get the correct lines up is not so difficult. My only concern is it may indicate some fault in the rangefinder mechanism?

Shouldn't - selecting or setting the framelines is a whole separate function from measuring subject distance (rangefinder mechanism).

The only place they intersect even slightly is in the parallax correction system - sliding all the framelines down and to the right as one focuses closer, to account for the lens seeing the world from down and to the right of the viewfinder.

And even then, the parallax movement is via a different set of levers and springs from the frameline selection system.

Try what I did - move the lever back and forth for a while, and see if it frees up.  That seemed to work for me, but     I still have a concern it might come back.  If so, I need to fix it before the warranty runs out, but it's been a while now, and the last time I checked, it was still working properly.  Maybe it's just a spec of something that will come off, leaving the camera working fine.

Regarding viewfinders and focusing and levers, I checked out my ancient M3 a few days ago - Wonderful viewfinder.  No electronics though.....

I think the best fix is to put the camera to work, so that the lever doesn't get sticky.  This is an intentional design feature, not a bug.

I think that this is an interesting thread. I do not remember that we had that already. But indeed I think that there is (at least) a slight problem: On my M10 I see a similar behavior. The lever does not move fully, fully smooth. As @MikeMyers did, I often move that lever back and forth to keep it loose. On the other hand I never thought to send the camera in as it eventually works fine.

I use that lever quite a lot to see the framing before I change the lens. I like it and for me its useful.

Something to test:

"When you mount a lens make sure that you have aligned the red index button on the lens with the unlocking button on the camera body, and then rotate the lens to the right as far as it will go, and with your finger off the unlocking button, rotate it back left until you hear a solid 'click'. Even though the manual doesn't mention the bit about taking the finger off the unlocking button and rotating back left after rotating right, on my M9 the correct bright lines will not always activate if I don't because the M-mount action is a bit stiff. Perhaps it is something similar with your M9, or perhaps not, but it is worth checking out at least as it could save you from sending it back."
