Livingstone Posted November 8, 2020 Share #21 Posted November 8, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I question whether the replacement sensor used on the Leica Digilux 2 that was performed using sensors used in the Sony DSC Cybershot F707 or the Sony DSC Cybershot F717 will create the quality photo equivalent to the actual sensor used by the Leica factory. In study the sensor used on both the Sony DSC f707 or the Sony DSC f717 have slightly different characteristics although the size remains the same. For instance the sensor used on the Sony DSC F707 shows megapixels of 5.24. vs megapixels 4.90 on the Digilux 2. Furthermore there is a slight difference of Sensor Resolution. The Sony DSC F707 is 2640 x 1985 with the Leica as 2552 x 1919. In the Sony Cybershot DSC F717 camera sensor vs the Digilux 2 sensor the true resolution of 4.9 megapixels remains the same, the native resolution remains the same as 2560 x 1920, pixel size remains the same at 11.8um[sq] and both host identical sensor sizes of 2/3" 8.8x6.6mm, however there is a difference of sensor light sensitivity the Digilux at 400 ISO and the DSC F717 at 800 ISO. It would appear the sensor from the DSC F717 may be the better choice matching however I question the question of light sensitivity rating. Any comments on and or concerning comparison of photos from the repaired Digilux 2 using the sensors from the DSC F707 or F717 cameras vs the original factory Leica Digilux 2 sensor installed would be interesting. Currently I have found no repair shop in the USA who is willing to do this repair/replacement of a bad Digilux 2 sensor using sensors out of the DSC F707 or F717. There appears to be one or 2 shops in the UK who advertise repairs on the Digilux 2 however they do not post to the USA. Advertisement Posted November 8, 2020 Posted November 8, 2020 Hi Livingstone, Take a look here Leica Digilux 2 Replacement Sensor?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
farnz Posted November 21, 2020 Share #22 Posted November 21, 2020 One of the problems with using the same CCD 'donor' sensor from another make of camera is that the Digilux 2's sensor is directly attached to the rear of the (fantastic) 28-90 Summicron lens as shown in this picture. The chances of a non-D2 sensor fitting the assembly are small and it's not clear how an adjustment or re-sizing could be done without compromising the donor sensor.
