I have an SL and thinking of SL2 for ibis, handling, EVF and dynamic range.  Pure amateur and fun use.

Looking for advice - part technical and part users experience please.  Couple of things causing me to stop and think: file size and noise.
Any views or experience on shooting at medium JPG resolution?  At that resolution is noise increased re SL?

Thank you.

Big John,  I owned both the SL and SL2 at one time.  I now use the M10-R and S3 for my professional work.  Everyone will give you their own ideas and opinions.  After using both SL cameras, I would recommend you stick with the SL and use the money for either another SL lens or vacation to go create superb photographs.  The SL works in a most excellent manner; the higher MPs only add to a little more detail.  The IBIS, dynamic range and even EVF is not a giant leap forward (perhaps it might for some who need or think they need those functions)  nor worthy of the expense.  Most photographers seem to forget, it is the content of the photograph that makes the viewer;  Stop, Look, Think and perhaps Feel something about that moment in time. This is the difference that separates a mere photo from a superb photograph.  The SL delivers in spades, it gets down to ones vision ands skills to create a superb photograph.  Hope my 2 cents helps.  r/ Mark

My 2009/10 Mac Pro handles my MM, M10 and SL2 DNG files equally well.  Storage is also cheap these days.  Don’t waste the information in those beautiful files, or negate the ability to revisit them down the road.

Just the IBIS is already a good reason for an upgrade to SL2. Higher resolution allows more cropping, always very useful. Multishot is also very interesting, even if only for fun.

EVF and dynamic range is not very different from SL. The handling is also very similar, I slightly prefer the buttons on the SL.

Noise is certainly not an issue for actual (even better if they are good) photographs, and even if you doo see some noise in your files past 6400 you can clean it up very impressively with Topaz Denoise... So much so that I decided to revisit some emergency shot made at 2500iso with my antique M9 and got amazing results, even sold some of those to a very picky stock agency... So shoot you cameras with DNGs, and make some small jpegs later, they will look amazing.

I worked on movie sets 6years ago that were already using 8K image acquisition.... and the mastering of the film and delivery for 26 meters wide cinema screens are made in.... 2K. Downscaling always improve perceived IQ.

Thanks all.  To expand my thinking...I most often use my SL with M mount Zeiss glass for size/weight convenience, so IBIS is attractive. That said when I use my 24-90 VE, the results are stunning, just amazing IQ (to my humble eye).

I rarely use video capabilities so I recognise there is a whole half of the SL2 that I don’t need....which sometimes takes me back to thinking of an M.  Usual concerns about rangefinder focusing, wish the EVF was better.
