Advertisement Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 Hi Good To Be Retired, Take a look here Is the M262 worth $1,000 more than the M240?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Sandokan Posted October 7, 2020 Share #22 Posted October 7, 2020 Old adage: "buy with the heart not the head". So if you buy the 240, you will end up buying the 262. so the extra cost of $1000 is cheaper in the long run. Or wait till one comes up for sale in Ca. You may not like the 262 in the end, but you have to own it first. I cannot however, understand your fascination - I didnt gel with the thicker body of the 24x cameras; got rid of my 240 and waited and waited till I got a M10. I had the SL and film M cameras to play with over those years.

Guest Posted October 8, 2020 Share #25 Posted October 8, 2020 I have an m262. I really like the lack of live view, video or EVF capability ,its just me and my rangefinder camera and simple centre weighted metering. Some people will point out that you can turn off this and that on the m240 which is what i had to do with in a big way my olympus pen ep-5 digital . But its great having everything you need and nothing not required in a camera in my view.

So much so that I've got another further question to bounce off of the community here ... The M262 that I found is over the border (it's in the US, I'm in Canada). By the time I pay for shipping and get hit with duties (taxes) on the way over, the M262 is going to be $1,000 more than what I can get an M240 for here, locally (I found one). Alternatively, I found an M246 Monochrom that'd work out to be ~ the same price as the M262 that I found. Is the M262 worth $1,000 more than the M240? Not for me. I think a digital M without live view is really crippled (filming I do not care much for). I would pay $1000 more for a 240 over a 262. The 262 was designed as a "cheap" budget version of the 240, and released in 2015 (replacing the previous old budget model M9-based M-E typ 220). Later on the 262 "budget Leica" was replaced and superseded by the new "budget Leica", the M-E typ 240, released last year (Q3 2019). Personally I would go for the M-E typ 240. I has the improved shutter from the 262, the live view from the 240, and the double 2GB buffer of the MP. It is really the absolutely best of all the "budget Leicas". Amazing camera! The only camera from the 240/262 generation that is better than the M-E 240 is the M-P versions; sapphire glass cover (harder glass on back screen) and frame lever (which I do not care much for). Colour vs Monochrome; I would love to own a Monochrome (I do not have one today), but it would be a second Leica M body for me (not replacing my primary colour one). That's why I'm trying to either find a way to get it over easier or find a local copy. The M240 I mention above is local so I'd go pick it up - no fees, no shipping, no duties, no taxes. Go for the 240. You will love to have the option to use modern features as Live View the times you do need it. The only better versions of the base 240 is the M-E and M-P versions. If you can find any of those, I would perhaps pay $1000 more (but it depends much on the condition of cameras).
