CV 35 1.4 vs 7Artisans 35 f1.4, why the size difference?

Thanks for that info, lct. Most interesting.

Historically I've never really been an avid devotee of the 35mm focal-length but I've been intrigued by the CV asph for a wee while now. As lenses go I greatly prefer Small and Sharp over Large and Fast so the lens in question is very tempting. For 40 years or so I've been using a '54 Summaron-M 35mm f3.5 and, good though it is, on those VERY rare occasions when f3.5 isn't fast enough (for my style of shooting!) I've been considering picking up an alternative. The Voigt. is uppermost in my mind and your positive comments on its behalf are noted and appreciated.

Philip.

You're welcome. Beware that the Ultron 35/2 asph shows some CA though. The Summicron 35/2 asph is not immune from it either, to be honest, as far as its v1 is concerned at least ( i have no experience with v2). The Ultron has also a bit busier bokeh. Great little lens otherwise, sharp as a tack, with almost the same compact size as that of the Summilux 35/1.4 pre-asph. You might love or hate its focus stick though. Also the glossy finish (or metal?) renders its DoF markings difficult to read in bright environments.

Well, I'm about to go off-topic - and all due apologies to Rivi in advance for my doing so - but thanks very much indeed for your further thoughts on the CV Ultron, lct. If anything, from your description of its attributes and foibles, I like the sound of it even more!

As it happens I almost bought a 35mm v1 Summilux last week (I was too late in pulling the trigger by a couple of hours which was mildly irritating) but, anyhow, I suspect that the CV f2 might be more to my liking in any case (ducks!). CA isn't a major concern of mine (at least in terms of colour-shift) as 50% my snaps are taken on a Monochrom and of the 50% shot on the M-D 'Colour Camera' 95%+ are converted to monochrome for printing. Any resultant fringing/mushiness - converted to more shades of black'n'white'n'grey - might still be present but will hardly be my main concern in terms of whether the snap is interesting or not.

Boke is (ducks again) almost completely unimportant to me with a 35mm lens. If I want to play the Boke game I'll use one of my 50mm f1.1 lenses wide-open instead. And I almost never play the Boke game. I simply don't take those types of photographs. Not My Thing At All. The area from f4 to f11 is my domain for 99% of my snaps.

Focus-stick sounds....erm....characterful! I LIKE character! Glossy finish and DoF markings? I'm one of the fortunate/crazy users of a 1959 (i.e. mirror-chrome-finish) 21mm f4 Super-Angulon-M lenses (*) about which Mr. Rockwell writes;

"The distance scale is shiny chrome, so it's impossible to read in direct sunlight. Read it in your body's shadow outdoors."

All-in-all the CV sounds right up my street!

If you ever feel you have the time and inclination to write a more informative review I would be most interested to see what your conclusions might be.

Thanks again!

Philip.

It would not be much interesting i fear as i use the lens on my digital CL mostly but it works fine on my M240 too. I prefer the Summicron 35/2 asph v1 on the latter though for its bokeh, focus tab, DoF markings and more classical handling on M cameras. FWIW.
