In case you think the cupholders in the plastic concole of your latest SUV, EV, Hybrid, etc. is cool, here's what  you could order from any Porsche dealer for your mid-'50s 356.

If I remember correctly, the cost of the option was around $12.00.

If you craved something more useful & tasty than mere mineral water for those long trips, and if your 356 was equipped with a cigarette lighter, you could order the optional Hertella auto-kaffeemaschine, with which you could brew enough excellent french press coffee to fill the two porcelain mugs that were supplied with it.

Given current texting and hands-free cellphone regulations while driving,I'm sure this would cause strong reactions among the 'authorities' nowadays.

The most famous of all the Jaguar XKSS cars...Steve McQueen's. Originally delivered white with red interior but McQueen had it repainted in British Racing Green and reupholstered by Tony Nancy personally in black leather. Supposedly this was his favorite car ever of all the cars he owned, he liked it so much that he repurchased it after selling it, when it appeared that he was going to loose his license for his crazy driving & excessive speeding.

I am a bit confused by the number of ignition cables and how they are routed. Is that a 5 cylinder engine? Why are dual ignition cables running to the center 3 cylinders, whereas there is only a single ignition cable running to each of the outer cylinders? And even if it is a 4 cylinder twin spark engine (which would match with the total number of ignition cables), the way how those cables are routed seems odd ...

The Alfa-Romeo Giulia TZ series was equipped with the Tipo 105, 1570 c.c. 4-cylinder in-line motors.  The 'racing' version of the TZs was powered by the 170-180HP version of the above described motor. The cylinder head for this engine was re-designed with two sparkplugs per cylinder and hemispherical combustion chambers with the plugs angled and 'off-center' in the head to facilitate optimizing the water-cooling jackets and to accomodate larger diameter valves with thicker shafts.

It only looks like it's a 5-cylinder motor because there are 5 spark plug holes, but actually the single front plug and the front plug of the first pair of plugs service cylinder #1, with the second plug of the first set of two ( note the angle olf the plugs ) firing cylinder #2...... and so forth.

Hope that clears things up.

The rarest Porsche factory accessory I've ever run across - a Naugahyde snap-on cover that fits over the cloth top of 356 cabriolets - first & only time I've seen one.
