Ivan Goriup Posted May 18, 2024 Share #284 Posted May 18, 2024 Before Zora Arkus-Duntov joined GM & eventually became the 'father of the Corvette', he & his brother ran Ardun Manufacturing Co. One of their products was to make an Overhead valve cylinder head / intake manifold conversion for Ford's popular V-8 'flathead' passenger car engine, to give it much more power to enable returning GIs with old jalopies to hot rod their Model A Fords, since the converted motors were too wide to fit Ford sedans. Here, a friend's 32 Ford 'Deuce' coupe with original (1947) -equipped, supercharged motor. Rare indeed ! M240-P / 35 mm Summilux FLE JZG Welcome, dear visitor! Ivan Goriup Posted May 25, 2024 Share #291 Posted May 25, 2024 (edited) 1958 PORSCHE 718 RSK 'Mittellenker' ( center steer ) race car. Available either as a two seater or as a F2 single-seat race car with 'kit' of parts necessary to convert to a 'normal' two-seater for sports car racing. Please note empty steering column opening in dash to left of lower small gauge to left of steering wheel. M240-P / 35mm Summilux FLE JZG Welcome, dear visitor! Ivan Goriup Posted May 29, 2024 Share #292 Posted May 29, 2024 To expand and further illustrate PORTSCHE's brilliant interpretation of FIA rules, here's as rare an image as I have personally ever taken: two 718 RSKs next to each other, one as an F2 single-seater, the right-hand car as a 2-seater. 4 F2 cars were produced for the factory team, and a mere handful of 'kits' were sold to privateer owners who wanted to convert their cars from time to time - to see them next to each other is nothing short of miraculous. I believe the image shows clearly which parts had to be changed to achieve either configuration........but it did require overall views of the cars, not partial detail shots. Ivan Goriup Posted June 11, 2024 Share #296 Posted June 11, 2024 In the late '50s & early '60s, the golden age of motorsports, ferocious competition between manufacturers was at its peak with everyone looking to find even fractions of horsepower. To find that elusive bit of extra HP & rpm, Ferrari turned to technical universities for help in the latest tech and aerodynamics since they had no wind tunnel of their own ( yet ), an excersize that yielded one of the signature 'tricks' for their 3-liter 250 series of race and road machines - the SNAP (Scarico Negativo Aria Pressione or ‘Exhaust Negative Air Pressure’ ) exhaust tips, which netted them a couple of very useful horses at higher rpm for Testa Rossas, 250 SWB GTs and GTOs.....not to mention improving the acoustics of the famous V-12 'music,. That timeframe was about the same period that cleaning up car emissions was becoming a factor and it was discovered that these tips helped in making the exhaust gases 'look cleaner' to the testing probe for emission testing. Original, in-the-box tips today sell for thousands $$$ with numerous replicas and reproductions being manufactured worldwide. Shown below, originals on Count Volpi's 'Serenissima' 250 GTO M9-P / 35mm Summilux FLE JZG Welcome, dear visitor! Ivan Goriup Posted June 23, 2024 Share #299 Posted June 23, 2024 I wonder how many realize that the earliest Jaguar XK-120s had bodies made of aluminum - then switched to all -steel in 1950 because world-wide demand for them completely overwhelmed the factory's ability to produce the alloy-bodied version in anything near sufficient numbers.
