I keep hearing its a fantastic lens, but I keep hearing its also VERY VERY different in rendering that the pre FLE. Is that your experience?

I think that opinion relates to the pre-ASPH Summilux, not to the Summilux ASPH pre-FLE.  So, two generations prior to current FLE version, not immediately preceding version, which mostly only lacked the floating element to address close focus (and secondarily focus shift).

I’ll try to find links but mainly came from this forum. So I don’t hear, I read !
what I’ve read is that the fle is more modern, sharper and more contraste than the Pre fle.

my pre fle doesn’t have any focus shift (just re tested on my 40mp M10r) so if they’re the same, I suppose I have no reason to upgrade ?!

I cannot comment posts i have not read  sorry but if your pre-FLE doesn't exhibit focus shift, i would upgrade only if i wanted the new metal hood personally.

In the meantime, here's another thread where they discuss the difference between the Pre FLE and the FLE. Post 9 and 13 plead in favor of a different look between the two versions.

Link?

There are a number of threads comparing these lenses, e.g.,

If you expect the FLE to have a "classic Leica 35 rendering", as stated in the link below, you will be disapppointed. The FLE is a modern lens with high sharpness at full aperture, contrary to classic designs providing some softness at f/1.4 or f/2. Quite usefull to shoot people with skin imperfections you don't want to display. With the FLE all those imperfections will become obvious. It is a lens i never use for forgiving portraits personally. YMMV.

So there IS a "look" difference between the FLE and the pre FLE... what I've been hearing and reading is true then.

I'm not sure of that as i don't own a pre-FLE but only you can know how your lens renders obviously. My own feeling is they render the same way besides focus shift but again i have no experience with the pre-FLE.

I fear I might be drifting off topic but... I've been looking for a silver version of the pre fle. It's been impossible to find as there were just 2000 copies made. A very rare lens.

However, in my search, I just found an even rarer copy: the titan version (11859) of which only a few hundred versions were made. And it's not even that expensive.

I have never had the chance to handle a titan lens before? Is it just the colour that changes and is it very far from the silver? Do you think it would be a nice lens to pair with a black M? Is there any other advantage to a titan lens, like durability?

Thanks

Matter of tastes. I don't have one but it was said to have less focus shift than the black version.

I sold mine. But after a short while I regretted it so much that I had to buy it back. 😉

Same here...DON´T sell the v4 Summicron ! You will appreciate its classic look, after your eyes getting tired of the Summilux FLE rendering. I ve been there, once in a while, we want to change the brush. And the V4 is painting differently.

I never had any focus shift on the black version. But that been on film. I tested it carefully.

Interesting, I wonder why the 28 CRON has so many issues, which made me scary. Is it also the v2 version? I think it is totally unacceptable for a premium brand like Leica to have lenses on the market with these sort of problems. They should have tested them in the factory.

Mind you, it depends what year  v1 is made. Mine is one of the latest, 2015. No problems at all. I heard the late ones are better as they fixed a few things. But, who knows, maybe I just got lucky .

For those of you sharing your experiences with your lenses, please mention which version of the lens you’re using (i.e.) ASPH I (or V1) or ASPH II (or V2). That goes for the Summilux 35mm (ASPH, Pre-FLE or FLE). Not only is this confusing to the OP, but to others as well as people.

Yes, very useful.

Also, is the experience on film, or on Leica digital. Because this is a huge difference.

The optical cell for both lens are similar and produce similar images, and you will struggle to see a difference in most images.  The floating elements in the FLE are to improve close range performance, which they do significantly. It is a fantastic lens.

I used both for many years on film. In larger  Prints 30x20 cm and up, you see a big difference, resolution is much higher and FLE is sharper in the Corners than pre ASPH. FLE Colors are little more vibrant and pop out (Portra 400), on pre ASPH they are more "natural". Black and white film like HP5 or FP4 look different too, FLE has more clarity and contrast in same lightening situations (Wet prints). But of course, you can adjust all the things so they look almost identical except corner sharpness if you are looking for it.
