Stef63 Posted August 27, 2020 Share #1 Posted August 27, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I started collecting M, R and LTM lenses in 2009 to be used on various M cameras. More than ten years later an SL2 is now on it’s way to join the family. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to stack a L to M adapter with a M to R adapter versus a native L to R adapter? Since I have already the T-M (which I think is the same as the L-M) for using my M lenses on the CL and a R to M for my R lenses on the M.. the price of a L-R seems a little bit hefty if stacking my two adapters will provide me the same features. Do they? Thanks for your advise.
Advertisement Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 Hi Stef63, Take a look here L-M and M-R combined or L-R adapter ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted August 27, 2020 Share #2 Posted August 27, 2020 The only difference will be that the adapter stack will not transmit lens information from the ROM (if present). I find the R adapter not worth the extra price.
caissa Posted August 27, 2020 Share #3 Posted August 27, 2020 (edited) I use the stacked adapters for almost all adapted lenses. This way I can attach really almost any lens of all brands. For ordinary lenses there is no drawback. For very large lenses (>400mm) there could be the limited diameter of the M mount that causes sometimes some vignetting. But I rarely use this sort of lenses. Other brands (e.g. Contax or Nikon or Pentax) do not have any information to exchange anyway. So the info can only be transmitted from the few ROMmed R lenses produced in the last few years before being abandoned (most are not) The L-M is worth the money, the L-R definitely not (far too expensive for very little functionality). Eclectic Man Posted August 27, 2020 Share #4 Posted August 27, 2020 The R Adapter L has a tripod mount useful with the heavier R lenses which do not have a tripod collar of their own when using a tripod. I'm not sure if the L to M and M to R combination allows for this. Another advantage of a direct L to R adapter compared to L to M and M to R connectors is that there is one less join in the connection between camera and R-Lens. The M to R adapter also includes a tripod foot mount you can attach if needed. Given that I have exclusively 3cam R lenses, the value proposition of the dedicated R to L was not there and the stacking of the R to M and M to L has not presented any issues for the majority of my lenses. I would agree with the earlier comment that the very long lenses (I have a 400/6.8) will get some outer image circle blockage from the R to M adapter however, in the case of that particular lens, the corners are poor anyway given the 2 element optical design field curvature. I typically crop to highlight the center of the image anyway (wildlife shots mostly). I do not have any corner image issues with a 280 for example. Agree that the M-L adapter is worth the expense, the R-L not really worth it. For using my R lenses on the SL2 & CL I purchased this dumb adapter Haoge R to L mount adapter for all of $30- Solidly made & does what it needs to do. I'm not a fan of stacking adapters, don't like the extra connections & resultant weaker links etc. potential disaster waiting to happen...
