Hello,

I just purchased a Elmarit M 28 2.8 Asph unused and it doesn’t mount properly on both my M6 and M8.2. The lens does flush contact and mount correctly except for the last bit. It doesn’t make it till the end to “click”. I don’t have this issue with several other lenses.
I wonder if it’s a fixable problem.

attached a picture that shows the missed last bit.

i was so looking forward to receiving this lens and so frustrated now.

any advice please? Thank you so much

Hi, ricco75, welcome to the forum!

I recall that the M8's mount was on the high side of the tolerance and required a bit of extra rotational force to get the lens to click into place properly and I assume that followed through to the M8.2.as well.  My first M8 was bought new in 2006 with the 28/2.8 Elmarit asph that was released at the same time and it was certainly stiff so whether it was a combination of 'high' tolerances in both the lens and the mount is difficult to say but possible.

I don't recall hearing of a similar problem with the M6 but it could be just 'high' tolerance in the lens and needs a little extra force to click home.

There were threads about it at the time and Leica confirmed that using a little extra force wouldn't harm the mount or lens provided that the lens was gripped in the hand with the fingers and thumb around the base of the lens and not higher up or on the hood.

Pete.

Hi, Pete

thank you so much for the swift reply and detailed information.

I managed to make it click with the M6 using some extra force. Not the usual click sound but fine.

With the M8.2 it’s impossible instead to get closer to the click point. And I used quite extra force. I took some pictures with it and look fine to my beginner eyes. I just wonder if I should consider a return to the seller. 3 other Leica lenses of mine work beautiful on both M6 and M8.2

Since you're in Paris perhaps you could go to a dealer who has a 28/2.8 Elmarit asph to see if their lens(es) will properly mount onto your M8.2?  If it won't mount properly then you will know that your M8.2 is the problem but if it will mount properly then you know that your Elmarit is the problem and return it to the seller or get him to refund the cost of changing the lens mount.

Thank you Pete. The refund for the cost of the lens mount sounds a good option if I find out the issue being the lens

Update on my unfortunate case: on the M6 the lens mounts better but it doesn’t actually click. The lens release button remains depressed.

Is the mount replacement an easy and not expensive repair?

thank you again for the advice

Hi, Ricco,

I have replaced a number of mounting flanges on M lenses (with inexpensive ones that have the 6-bit coding pits) although not the 28/2.8 Elmarit asph but I doubt that it would be anymore difficult than the others.  The important thing is to get the correct flange with the holes in the right place, then it's simply taking the screws out using the right-sized screwdriver so as not to damage the slots, take the old flange out, put the new flange in so that the coding pits are in the right place and put the screws back in. After all screws are loosely in remember to tighten opposite screws one at a time so the load is evenly spread across and around the flange.

The only flange I had a problem with was my 50/1 Noctilux because there were thin shims under the flange that I didn't know about but your lens shouldn't have those.

Instead of changing the flange you might consider taking the lens and M8.2 to a machine shop and ask them to widen the flange depression very slightly until it locks onto your M8.2.

Thank you Pete. Will follow your advice and keep you posted on the result from the lab
