Those leaked (or fake?) specs might address some of your questions: https://t.co/5rIb8Ggs0T?amp=1.

These specs are almost too much for me. I cannot see if ibis is included or not. But I see ISO up to 204k, so even 2 stops better than SL2. (And 6000x4000 = 24 MP). And a mediocre EVF, but good enough maybe compared to other entry cameras.  So what is the price reduction ?

So an interesting entry offering with the 20-60 zoom. As stated before, why now and not already 12 months ago ? A good product in a time of crisis when people have other problems than a new camera ...    I call that unfortunate timing.

The R&D on the SL/Q/M10 sensor must be paid-off by now. They could release a Q-like camera for $2,000 less than the SL2.

It wouldn't cannibalize their sales either. Leica people need both cameras! (...and an M, and a Q, and a film M, and a Barnack, etc.).

Leica won’t release a cheap camera. Doesn’t matter if R&D is paid. Cheap stuff damages the Leica brand. Leica want to remain as an exclusive brand.

Trying to compete on price is death to the Leica brand. They have no interest in what Sony, Canon or Panasonic can sell a camera for or even what they can sell it for. It’ll be as much as they think Leica customers will pay.

The S5 clearly is aimed at competing with SoCanNikon lower end mirrorless offerings. The king in that space is the A7III.  Given the reduction in specs over the S1, presumably the pricing will equal or undercut that camera ie. < $1800 US.   I'm sure from a Leica perspective, this introduction is viewed as a positive development. Pano fights the commodity side wars as its proxy. Meanwhile Leica represents the top of the food chain, gaining entry level systems that herd more to the L platform. The eco system opens up to a larger user base and they don't have to spend a penny to make that happen. So, from where I sit, the S5 has zero effect on Leica's own offerings. The only possible effect is that it might put even more downward pressure on used SL-601 prices. Whether thats a negative or a positive depends on whether you're contemplating buying or selling one.

Agree with this 100%. It allows Leica to keep itself for the prestige market with Panasonic opening it up to a different price bracket. Maybe some of the new entrants will develop until they can afford to add some Leica gear to their system.

EVF resolution is a pretty big disappointment for this camera.

The EVF and battery size are the two main differences between this camera and the more expensive S1. I guess you'll have to pay a bit more if you find either of those essential.

Agreed.  I already have an SL2, so if I were going that route, I would probably pick up a used SL or S1R for just a bit more than what the S5 will cost.

I have been following a couple of YouTube reviews on the S5. It is said that the Autofocus improvement on AFC tracking made significant improvements on video on the AF reliability over the subject tracked. That should translate over to better AFC tracking for photography. The S5 comes with same image sensor & processor as the S1. In some reviews, the comment that in crop mode produces better AF (in video). More importantly, the new algorithm found in the S5 will be making its way into S1/R/H through later firmware updates. Will that mean the SL2 will receive the similar firmware update with new AF algorithm later?

Likely, but only Leica knows (and possibly a few outside Wetzlar). My bet is that we will see similar SL2 FW-update sometime in 2021...

Too many lumps and bumps for me. I'd run a power grinder across the Sony top plate. I hope the CL2 will have had that treatment. The minimalist lines are an attractive feature of the M & T/TL2.

Enter the Sony A7C...
