Andrea Bianchi Posted August 10, 2020 Share #1 Posted August 10, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I've never been a huge fan of the Leica Q cap, neither the Hood. I was looking for a replacement and found the Overgaard's Lens Hood. It looks awesome but it is really expensive. Do you have any experience with this Hood? Is it possible to use a regular plastic cap while it is mounted on the Q? It seems very big, does it lift the camera up while mounted or it is at ground level? If you have any pic, please post it Edited August 10, 2020 by Andrea Bianchi

iRandom Posted August 10, 2020 Share #2 Posted August 10, 2020 Another option you may want to consider is the LIMs. It is not cheap, but it is well made and does allow for using a pinch style lens cap. I've been using a Breakthrough Photography cap. http://limsdesign.com/product/detail.html?product_no=201&cate_no=12&display_group=
Viv Posted August 10, 2020 Share #3 Posted August 10, 2020 I am completely satisfied with the Leica hood. The cap is a terrible piece of design, so I don't use it, relying instead on the Leica hood plus a UV filter on the lens for protection.

Jaymz Posted August 11, 2020 Share #5 Posted August 11, 2020 The hood Is meant to protect the lens from damage, moisture, dust and dirt. The multiple hoods on the market that have vented sides allow the lens permanent exposure to all the elements, 24/7 either in the case, on a desk or around your neck. The closed hood provided with the Q2 along with a lens cap, keeps the lens clean and isolated from the dust, dirt and moisture in the air. I personally use the Qcap however what would be the point of a cap if the hood you use have open vents or whatever they’re called?
higa Posted August 11, 2020 Share #6 Posted August 11, 2020 I have one of the Green Overgaard lens hoods. I bought it when I had a green half-case and a green strap. Anyway, it comes with a pinch cap (just a standard generic pinch cap) that fits in the hood. It is rather big, so that is why when I got tired of my green combo, I retired the hood as well. I think there was sort of pouch that goes with it too. I think it must be in one of my storage boxes now. As a hood it worked well. It was a little bulky, but not too bad if I remember. The ordering process was an ordeal though. The hood comes from China. It took exactly 30 days from my order date before I got a shipping notice. This was pre-COVID, so it took only another week to get to me from China. So I had to wait 5 weeks for the hood. IF you search in the forums, it seems I was sort of lucky that way. Some people have had to wait way longer. But other than that, that was the only negative. The hood itself is finely made and machined, all the screw threads are great and no problem. And since it is associated with a Leica product, of course it will cost more, lol.

stuny Posted August 11, 2020 Share #8 Posted August 11, 2020 Vents in hoods were designed so that the hood would not block the rangefinder window, but still provide some protection from lens flare. Arguably, the vent's only purpose on the Q is for style. Personally, I like the Q hood a great deal but detest the factory supplied lens cap. There are several alternatives for lens caps from other manufacturers which are far better, ranging from a generic neoprene for less than $10, to about $80 for one called the Q-Cap which attaches like a snap-cap, but seems over priced to me. My favorite is the one from Thumbs Up, called the Match Technical and costs $50. In comparison one can get the original cap for $50 and replace it every few months. Ning Ning Posted August 11, 2020 Share #9 Posted August 11, 2020 The only reason for an alternative lens hood in my eyes is the use of a polarizing filter. Because screwing the original lens hood on and off is an imposition.

Actually, the hood is to reduce lens flare. Physical protection of the lens is secondary.
antigallican Posted August 11, 2020 Share #11 Posted August 11, 2020 (edited) optech neoprene cover does away with this problem cheaply and effectively. You just use the original hood but put the neoprene cover over it. Stuff it in your pocket while taking pictures. If you lose one buy another - they're cheap Edited August 11, 2020 by antigallican autocorrect induced solecism 1

I carry CPL and macro filters in my bag, but never wanted to bother with using them since it required taking off the lens hood. The Lim's hood solves that. Trankster Posted August 11, 2020 Share #14 Posted August 11, 2020 I have the black Overgaard hood and have used it for a year. It is high quality and fits my Q2 perfectly. I found the size to be fine and like the convenience of changing filters without removing the hood and using a punch type lens cap. A few cons: It is expensive and delivery is slow. The seller is not good about responding to emails (it takes several to get an answer) or communicating on status of the order. If you are patient, you will receive the hood. Welcome, dear visitor!
