Considering taking the X Vario on the ski slopes??

I've been taking the little D-Lux 109 onto the slopes with me, packed into a small hard case I lined with foam.  I'm thinking Id like to take the X Vario with me.  It won't fit into the hard case but I have a nice waist pack that I can line with foam and/or bubble wrap.  The X Vario is a very solid camera but I'm wondering if the foam padding will be sufficient protection if I take a spill.

 

Anybody have any experience with this?

I don’t know the force of the spills that you take, but I have been taking cameras, mostly but not exclusively Leicas on to the slopes for over thirty years without damaging one -ever. The foam is a good idea; not to protect the camera but to protect your body from the camera in case you fall on it.

Perhaps a really good helmet is more essential than the foam.

The XV is a superb camera for skiing.

I ski with a Monochrom. I work as ski guide, so I ski a lot. Had an X1 before, tough enough for alpine climbs and steep ski descents on 5000m peaks in the Caucasus. The X1 also saved several photo projects when my analog M6/7 would again refuse to work. My Sigma DP2 survived 7000 m.
Fell on my Fuji XT1 last year (onto concrete from a pick-up truck in Kazakhstan, weird accident) - crushed my lung, but the camera still works.
Digitals are tougher than some think. I think the X-Vario will do just fine. In fact, I was thinking to get another X1 or X-Vario for the really rough stuff, though the Fuji has proven itself as well - beyond expactations.

The only Leica I trust on snow, ice, heavy rain, thunderstorms, wild water rafting and rougher sailing or speed catamaran tours is an X-U.
Also it is very welcome to be protected against sand and spray on beaches and to be able to take some photos when snorkeling a little bit under water.
