Hi

I have read quite some threads & articles about this Lux 50 asph Black Chrome and about its ¨limited edition¨  status. But I am still confused. My interpretation for the time being is that 500 was built and launched as LE. No more than 500 would be produced stated by Leica at the time. But another 500 has seemingly later been produced... without further comments from Leica?

Can anyone confirm what is the historical truth and also comment on what can be expected of the future ¨truth¨ (concerning potential new productions of this lens)?

No bigger deal to me. But since a new copy of this lens seems to be on its way 😀, I am still curious!

I bought one of the first batch of 500 hundred and I don't recall that it was sold as a limited edition but as a 'retro' lens.

I took the plunge because it didn't sound at the time that there were going to be any more than the 500 made and I didn't want to miss out.  Whether it would have been a LE or not would have been irrelevant to me because I believe that Leica lenses are made to be used rather than used as potentially appreciating investments (no offence intended).

Production was extended several times due to demand. The only special or limited edition versions that seem ‘sacred’ are the LHSA variants. But Leica is free to create new versions or finishes.

Bill Rosauer explains the LHSA special edition approach and history...

In the same thread, here’s a response from Leica on the Summilux BC...

Hi and thanks all

It could seem that I... as many, walk in to the hear-say trap here concerning the bc being a true LE. However, again in post # 9 in the thread above it is seemingly again confirmed by Leica that the lens with strong intents was to be limited to 500 pieces 😉. Which makes at least me to draw conclusions...

Jeff, you say ¨several times¨... I have read ¨one more batch of 500¨... do you have more specific info?

PS: whatever the case is I look forward to receive this lens and to see the brassing coming through 😀

Regards to all!

That’s the wording the Leica rep used in the written response to Lins-Barroso linked above.

Hi

As a sidenote... I just received & unpacked my 50 lux BC. I have unpacked a few new lenses, but this experience was, well... WOW! Entirely subjective  and ¨worthless¨ of course, but this lens with all its accessories gives just an amazing feel! By far the most beautiful piece at least I have owned!

Yes, whether it's a limited edition or not is perhaps irrelevant.  Without doubt it is a special lens.

I too love the BC and hope you enjoy it.

that said, good luck brassing it per your #5 post. The black chrome is VERY resilient.

Hi and thanks!

And concerning brassing; I know now! I guess I have been reading too much Overgaard 😉
