"M8" silence

Hi Mark

Perhaps it isn't a full format lense, just a stop gap lense for the M8 until a full format camera is produced. Leica probably already knows how far this is away, and then its back full circle. It would not be embarrasing for this new Tri Elmar to be thus , since Leica haven't gone shorter than 21mm for quite some time.

Leica have said that any lenses will be FF, whether they have shifted position is not clear. Leica majors on compatability though it will be a bit rich if they support a goggled lens from long ago and introduce a lens for the M8 only.

That said, there isn't much appetite amoong the film boys for a lens wider than 21mm, so most users of such a lens would be M8 users.

Excerp of what Stefan Daniel said in october 2005, as quoted here: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18928

"To make true wideangle photography available, one or more shorter focal length lenses will be introduced to offset the crop factor; first up will be something of about 15mm. This lens will also be useable full frame with film on the current cameras."

It could be full frame and the prices, as mention, are the dealer's prices. They could do dual Aux finders at nifty prices, too.

While not for the M class, Leica has designed quite a few short focal lengths for the Pany digicams, the latest being the 14-50mm on the L-1. They may also have noticed how the CV lenses have gain a following and want a slice of that action. I'll be interested in the size of this one.

The marks in the barrel for depth of field calculation are not the same for 35mm format and for 1,33x cropped format. This would be the only problem with new 35mm lenses for the Leica M8.

Hi Ruben,

New DoF markings could differentiate film and digital the same way as Tri-Elmar's to differentiate focal lengths possibly.

Now it is not difficult to use the DoF markings of the nearest faster f stop in practice.

It's very unlikely that they will compromise build quality by outsourcing. Leica has only two production plants (Solms for lenses and body assembly, Portugal for some parts and acessories). Most parts are build by suppliers from Germany, some of them are former Leitz-companies. The Leica CEO also announced that they will invest about 15.000.000 € into Solms.

Many companies tried to reduce costs, Rollei outsourced to Singapore etc... and they all broke down. Leica would be only a ordinary camera with a red dot on it and you have to pay for it. You really want that? There are enough cheap cameras on the market - but Leica-quality? Do you think the Leica-quality is only different because they have a great name or because they make something different in philosophy and production?

That reminds me of people who bought a M-class or a Z3 and expected Mercedes/BMW-quality just because of the brand...

Do you want Leica or just the brand?

The shutter will be cheaper, the mechanics will be cheaper (no film transport) and electronics (depends on Kodak) are cheap - that's most likely the reason for the M8-price (and R&D that was mostly already spent on the DMR). Digital cameras only cost that much because customers are willing to pay for this "new cool stuff" .

All the more reason to have a dedicated 1.3 crop factor superwide angle lens. If by relaxing the sensor coverage requirement, they could get a F2.8 or better yet F2.0 out of an acceptable sized lens, it would be well worth the trade-off. After all the full frame guys don't really care cuss they wouldn't buy a superwide anyway.

An accessary finder is inevitable. I suggest making it a dual finder, with framelines for the new wide and for the 21mm. The rangefinder framelines can be used from 28mm and up. I would just leave the dual finder on the camera permanently as I do the 28/35 dual minifinder on the RD1. Its no problem at all since you never have to fiddle with anything. Just change the lens and your good to go. Very simple.

Isn't speculating about something that is aready too late to have any control over fun?

Georg, I think most people on this forum see and appreciate the inventiveness and effort that lies behind the brand and are whole-heartedly wishing for its survival in this age of glitzy throw-aways. Above all Leica will not compromise their flagship product, if they do the brand name will just wither on the vine.

IMHO Used with skill, outsourcing can and will help Leica become a healthier and once again truly innovative company in the field of photography.

Rich Pinto kinda brushed the edges of an NDA with that post, methinks.

Cheers,

Sean

Which means you probably know the contents of that specific NDA ... from which can be inferred ......

Yes, I did read your post on the forum about the 15th Sept article. Hopefully, very much looking forward to an in depth evaluation.

Sean,

If it's not too late to edit your forthcoming article, try to let us know then if the production version either lends itself, or is in fact laid out to expect a v1, v2,...etc., both electronically and all that implies, and optically (e.g assorted VF mags etc.)

Thanks,

Jerry

The secrecy surrounding this thing is extraordinary. Can't believe it's anything to do with thwarting the competition, more likely to do with the purity of the reveal as we head towards Photokina. Last thing they want is to peak too early (Aston Martin AMV8, Panasonic L1 anyone?) and have people refer to the M8 as, "oh yes, that thing that was leaked a couple of months back".

NDAs I've signed in the past have not only prevented me revealing anything about the subject of the NDA but also the fact that I'm party to it, even that I WAS party to it in perpetuity.

Seems to me Sean has played it very much by the rules - he's never confirmed that he has hands-on experience of the camera even though it seems likely he's been involved with testing it for many months, tough job but somebody has to. We do know he has an inside track into Leica becuase of the poll he did a few months back on what else people were looking for once they had their M8...

Surprised he went firm on the 15th for the Leica announcements though. Maybe that's the equivalent of the Nikon and Zeiss countdowns. Perhaps we'll see one on the Leica web-site soon.
