cboy Posted June 9, 2020 Share #1 Â Posted June 9, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, Which of the do you think stands above the other. Unfortunately i have to part with one of the two. It hard to choose one over the other as im equally fond of both...One has refined modern look to the images whilst the other has a timeless vintage look. Advertisement Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 Hi cboy, Take a look here 50mm Elmar or 40mm M-Rokkor?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Cobram Posted June 9, 2020 Share #2 Â Posted June 9, 2020 Rokkor - better versatility.

lct Posted June 9, 2020 Share #4  Posted June 9, 2020 You mean Elmar or Elmar-M? Rokkor for Minolta CL or Minolta CLE? Elmar-M is the latest model. It's my favorite 50 ever so you know my answer but it has no "timeless vintage look" at all. I have a Rokkor 40/2 for Minolta CLE too and it is a very good lens indeed. Better so than the Summicron or Rokkor for Minolta CL in that it has no sloping cam and shows a bit less flare but all 40's have the same issue on rangefinders i.e. one may like or hate the 40mm focal length on the 50mm (or 35mm by filing the flange) frame lines of the rangefinder.

cboy Posted June 9, 2020 Author Share #6  Posted June 9, 2020 Thanks for all your comments. They are a very good points to consider. I currently have the Elmar-M and Rokkor mk II version i believe. Rokkor however does feel easier to use as the Elmar-M requires it to be extended before use. Both are super compact which is appealing Lct, do you find that you need to extend the Elmar-M  before mounting as i find it more difficult to mount when its not extended. Im always afraid if i mount it unextended that it may accidently hit something it shouldnt. Optically the vintage look i feel i get from the Rokkor could be from the character of the bacground blur but whatever it is definately different to the Elmar-M.

There is no risk it hits the shutter or the sensor but it might damage or misadjust the roller cam of the camera.

Ko.Fe. Posted June 10, 2020 Share #10  Posted June 10, 2020 I not sure how many versions of Rokkor-M are. I had the latest one. Second version of CLE. Sold it. Prior to this I sold Elmar-M. If I ever buy one of those lenses again, it will be Elmar-M. It was one of the very few lenses shining on bw darkroom prints. Very classic, sharp, yet smooth portraits with Tessar character. And I don't know why but with 40mm lens on Leica it feels like Smena or to feel it better as Olympus Trip :). But not Rollei 35...
cboy Posted June 10, 2020 Author Share #11 Â Posted June 10, 2020 Great insight Ko.Fe! I agreee with you there with the. Elmar-M and portraits. And I understand your point with the Rokkor with the images you get similar to film compacts albeit crisper. Maybe that's why I get that vintage vibe from the Rokkor
