M8 & Spectacles Lenses

Wilson the reason that lens bring up the 24/35 lines is because that frameline position was used for the 135mm lens on M's that didn't have 35mm framelines or combined them with the 135.

Ed,

I guessed it was something like that. I missed out on M2 to M7 and went straight from LTM Leicas to digital ones.

I own one 135mm Elmarit, old optical formula, new style mount (55mm filter thread) and by Gum it focuses right on and there are no finder problems. Now if the beast weighed about one half pound less, I would be perfectly happy with it.

Lars,

Like you, being no youngster, that is one of the main reasons I went for the Tele-Elmar instead. Have not had a real chance to play with it yet but seems no more difficult to focus than the Elmarit 90/2.8.

No, but the framing, the framing! This is why I have been agitating for a 135mm Apo-Telyt with spectacles.

This is a good reason to have Leica install a 90 mount on the 135. This frame shows about 120mm on the M8 which makes it far easier to compose

The fan club of 135 on M8 ! is clearly a respectable pressure group for Leica people :) ... I have both 135 2,8, old, and the TE f4: prefer a lot this one using the above mentioned "double the RF window" method (I throw away my initial idea of finding some 3rd party 180 VF); btw, my old 2,8 doesn't focus very right, so I'll anyway never would use it at 2,8... Let,s hope they'll make something... goggling the ApoTelyt could be an idea, but would be nice also to follow the "Summarit trend"... a compact f4 or even 4,5, not too costly, with the ME90 goggle assembly.

Woody,

See Jaap's tip above in the post - works perfectly to give you 90 frame lines on the TE 135 withouth changing the bayonet and focusing is not affected. On looking at the focus cam with its very long bearing surface, I can only assume it is intentional.

My goggled v1 135/2.8 performs perfectly and the goggles REALLY help the focussing. Frame lines are right on. Always thought I had a dinosaur here but it is really nice on the M8. Absolutely love it on the M7s as well. It stays with me all the time. I hear they are hard to find due to the above positive attributes. And, you don't have to 'guess' the framing. Cheers.......

There are plenty around and fairly low prices but most are in poor condition with fungus, balsam separation and goggle misalignment. When I was going to get one, Malcolm Taylor said to always factor a rebuild into my budget. In the end I decided the T-E 135 was more to my taste and given that I found this completely unused, still in its factory bag T-E for about the same price as I would have had to pay for a reasonable Elmarit 135/2.8 before the rebuild, the decision was made for me.

The 2.8 over the years I bought and sold three times. It is quite a good lens, in fact it has long been one of the best SLR 135's. But it never was a lens I loved, it lacked punch, was not very good at finest detail, somehow not a M lens. The 4.0 now, that is a great lens, just a tad behind the APO, arguably one of the best lenses ever built. Not very hard to focus either.

The T-E 135 is a PIG to code with a Sharpie. Firstly the most appropriate code (135 Elmarit/2.8) is 001001, which is not the easiest to mark with a Sharpie and second, as I am using it beyone the lens lock detent to get the 90 frame-lines up, the code will be in a different position from my template. Failed so far but will keep trying. It is really just to get 135 showing on EXIF's.
