All tricky  - I agree its a total downer its not a complete boxed set. I think I will pass on this and wait until I can find one for around 4500-6500 they do once in a while come up for sale. I really want a M7 - I know its has its quirks but I love the M7. Patience is virtue. I mostly conceder this ridiculously priced M7 because its my 50th B-day in two weeks and I deserve one, I think....

The most beautiful copies aren’t always the most perfectly functioning Leica’s.

Are you talking to me? 😉🙂 I have a beautiful silver M7 which was worth the 2750€ to the brim. What made it even more worth was the moment when I layed the ADOX Scala 160 in it and developed that film in Silvermax, just as a negative. Printed on Bergger CB, I don’t know how I can surpass that with my Monochrome1 with a digital print on Canson.

I shoot this 20 year old Scala, expired film a few weeks ago - will develop it this week.

8000 Euro is incredibly expensive. You could get a black paint M4 for half that at Meister Camera. Sure no meter, I know, but it's a classic M and black paint at that. And if you could settle for a black chrome M7 then Red Dot has three in stock (two are 0,72x) for around 2500 GBP. Not the same I know (I'm also a black paint fan), but it's an option.

Unless the AE of the M7 is a necessity, I would personally go for this camera, at almost half the price of that M7 (and this may of course be completely moot if you've bought already):

https://www.schouten-select.nl/index.php/products/leica/leica-m-systeem/leica-m-systeem-camera-s/leica-m6-ttl-millennium-black-paint-box-2973.html

I have one of these and it is in my humble opinion so much more than just any other à la carte Leica. I know, I know there are lots of commemorative M6 models, to the point that it is silly. But this model is in my view one of the few that was made for a good reason, to celebrate the new millennium and it was made in a small series of 2000 cameras only which makes it a bit special. I've never understood why people would ever pay a premium for, for example, the à la carte MP for some purported "mechanical perfection" and the supposed MP pedigree of those early MPs that these days sell for thousands and thousands of Euros. True the M3 rewind may not be to your liking, but I honestly don't think it is very different in use from the rewind I have on my M4. And it's black paint everywhere, even on the rear door. Plus the ISO dial looks much nicer than what I've seen on MPs and M7s, and the engraving on the top is really classical too.

All my views evidently. I hope you find what you're looking for.

Hi - well I have found a mint never used Leica M7 à la carte black paint MP upgraded (0.72) and recently CLA'd by Leica in Germany.

Advice / Questions for you

This camera has a service box only from a recent CLA - what box would normally come with an à la carte order? I find it a bit off that the seller of such a rare gem don't have the original box.

- All paper work exist and CLA documents.

The price is 8K€ - is that remotely possible to recover in a auction sale if I would want one day? Its a staggering expensive but is it normal?

- Tamarkin had one for sale, I was on a waiting list but he messed it up and I missed buying it with two days. Í was mildly disappointed to say the least. Thats was a 0.58 finder good condition not
unused but no dings etc and I think he wanted 5800 USD thats 4800€. So for a few marks on the bottom plate and 0.58 finder they can be found at 3200€ less.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is the price nearly normal / justifiable, I know thats a relative and subjective question. But from a collectors point of view is it reasonable ?

Lots of truth to this, I have nerver had a M6, not sure why they never appealed to me.

I have a black paint MP and Black Chrome M7 thats "black dotted"  - but the M6 BP is nice so is the M4 BP but they are expensive - currently see one listed for 5800 USD.

I promised I would post some pictures taken with 20 year old Agfa Scala 200 - snapped the pictures in November with M7 I don't remember what lens I used but PRE ASPH 35 mm Summilux I think. Picture with Agfa Scala 200 - This film 🎞 expired over 20 years ago (year 2000) its been stored in basement  (hot in summer / cold in winter) since then until I picked it up this September. Enjoy and Marry Christmas to all of you.

Great! I see that I did not say too much, even after 20 years this film has stunning deep blacks, which gives together with the lens’s bokeh a nice depth and 3D effect. Respect for how you developed it M10Alpine!!

I cant take take credit for the excellent development, my Leica store (Geneva) works with a small lab in Nyon, Switzerland who did the development and scaling. I just snapped them. Sadly I don't have a dark room.

This is a truly excellent result for a 20 year old roll of Scala 200 - I am not surprised, though.  From what I have seen, B&W emulsions that are decades past their develop by date still do quite well.  Color film is another matter, though - it tends to suffer from significant color shift, loses contrast and ends up with a somewhat milky appearance.

This is another compelling argument for black and white film.

I recently exposed a roll of 116 Kodak Verichrome Pan  with an expiry date of October 1966. The result was quite acceptable. I have one more roll in the freezer.

Maybe E-6 emulsions hold up better over time (?)  Thinking back, the results of long expired color film coming out looking sickly were almost always C-41 film.

That’s my experience at least. Even with the good old Agfachrome 1000 RS I had lovely results years after expiration date. Very nice grain with 1000ASA

Verichrome Pan is a black and white film or was that just a general observation. I have used some fairly out of date E-6 films with quite good results.

Two more from that same role of Scala 200

Beautiful results. I just love how inky blacks can still retain detail.

It's pretty incredible how the M4 BPs have increased, still they are far from what the M3 and M2 in black paint cost.

It's certainly a feeling connected with picking a camera. I was only trying to suggest a very useful alternative for considerably less. This is how they wear in case it's interesting to see.

One thing that struck me when I looked around at sites earlier is that there seem be a lot fewer second-hand Ms around these days. Perhaps this has something to do with the pandemic. If so, this is probably not the best time to look for such a camera.

Best
