pattyfrank Posted July 18, 2020 Author Share #725 Posted July 18, 2020 Well Stu, Looks like Pete has wooed all our 'wheel guys' to visit Barnack Monthly (me too). That's okay. They'll be back maybe when Pete gives us another challenge. Meanwhile, I liked this rod at today's Cars & Coffee -- the first event since lock up. Cheers to all. Welcome, dear visitor! John Z. Goriup Posted July 19, 2020 Share #726 Posted July 19, 2020 Speaking of cars & coffee, during a recent 'Monterey Historics' a couple of years ago I saw three Ferrari 275 GTS /4 NART Spyders. With only ten units ever made, this is one of the rarest and best Ferrari road cars ever. JZG Welcome, dear visitor! pattyfrank Posted July 22, 2020 Author Share #733 Posted July 22, 2020 Le Bègue traveled to the United States to compete in the 1940 Indianapolis 500 alongside fellow Frenchman René Dreyfus. Driving a pair of Maseratis for the American/French owner Lucy O'Reilly Schell. They finished 10th. After the war, Le Bègue was elected vice-president of the French Drivers Association and prepared to return to racing. Unfortunately he was accidentally asphyxiated by gas leaking from a defective water heater in his bathroom. And they say racing is dangerous. Welcome, dear visitor! John Z. Goriup Posted July 28, 2020 Share #735 Posted July 28, 2020 During the first half of August every year, what in my opinion represents the ultimate celebration of vintage / collector / classic automobiles anywhere takes place on the Monterey peninsula,on the track at Laguna Seca, several Concours with different themes, culminating with the prestigeous Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as the final event on the third Sunday in August, an increasing number of auctions, seminars, neighborhood car shows, tours and a general gathering of freiends & automotive fanatics, many of whom make the trek to the area their much anticipated annual vacation. Not to slight the Goodwood gathering, the LeMans Classic every two years, the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio continuations and all the other vintage meetings worldwide, but in my experience no other gathering offers anywhere near the range of automotive experiences and the huge variety of all the aspects of the hobby. This is about the time I would usually begin making my preparations to spend my sweet time at Car Week, but this year, with the cancellation of the entire thing, and the confinement brought about as a result of the virus it's going to be a long & dreary slog of the 'Dog days' of a hot summer at home, instead of nurturing and indulging my personal version of 'motor mania' to the fullest. Therefore, please allow me to reminisce about a particularly enjoyable year and look back in photos at an edition when Ferrari was the featured marque. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To watch the action at the rich choice of cars being auctioned off is always entertaining, amusing, puzzling, informative and occasionally shocking JZG Welcome, dear visitor! John Z. Goriup Posted July 28, 2020 Share #736 Posted July 28, 2020 The very first event is what used to be referred to as the 'Pre-Historics' back when the motorsport portion was called the 'Historics', but was renamed the 'Reunion', and consisted of a full weekend of folks who owned some of the most exotic cars ever made, but never drove them, and used the weekend to familiarize themselves with the cars and learn about safety and vintage racing protocol. ________________________________________________________________________ A '56 TdF 250 Coupe in Turn #4.............needless to say, the flatbeds and tow-trucks are busy all weekend long. John Z. Goriup Posted July 28, 2020 Share #738 Posted July 28, 2020 Sometimes cars parked in the pits are more exotic and interesting than the race cars that are shipped in from all over the world. The games of one-upmanship all week long are a genuine scource of entertainment and amusement. JZG Welcome, dear visitor! John Z. Goriup Posted July 29, 2020 Share #739 Posted July 29, 2020 One local gentleman ( in thje Bay area ) usually brings his entire world-class collection of Ferraris and makes a point to drive them all on the track in their respective classes...................and usually springs a surprise that noone knew about that he found, bought or traded for. John Z. Goriup Posted July 29, 2020 Share #740 Posted July 29, 2020 It's not just the sheer number of cars most mortals usually just get a chance to read about that are on the grounds, it's the caliber of the cars you'll trip over all week long that is relentlessly overwhelming. I think I counted 6 or 7 SWB 250 GT Coupes that year ..............and they were everywhere, not just on the Concours field - in resaturant parking lots, at hotels, shopping centers and frequently stuck in traffic jams.
