Leica M system has old stuffs that I use for decades for near range or proxi-photography.

With M10 and it's liveview/EVF , I tried some with more or less succes.

Each case, you must define which type of reproduction scale you want, for example 1:10 ( field 24cm x 36cm) or 1:2 ( 48mm x 72mm ) of your subject.

- I have used Elpro close-up lens screwing in front of the lens, for about 1:3 to 1:7 with my trusty 90mm lens for example.

- Another type is to mount rings between the lens and camera, there is one nice variable length as 16464 for Visoflex to use only optical cell of some lenses.

- and some other exotic or not devices to bring close-up (or macro) to Leica M system herited from the old screwmount Leica : Somky, Beoon, etc.

Beoon in Wiki by which I "scan" my slides or negatives

Have fun ....

Anyway, fascinating world to discover around us.

Hi Schittra,

i personally find it hard to do any type of macro photography with the M10. For example I tried to get some shots of a lens I wanted to sell on eBay, it was kind of hard even with the 75mm Summarit. Problem is the minimum distance you need. Even 70 cm is too far.

I had a Leica Q before, man that was great - closeups up to around 10cm, macro mode with no extra gear needed, with a simple twist. I kind of miss it a little ...

i believe there are ways for the M10 (macro Adapter coupled with live view or Visoflex) but I guess it may be a frustrating path till you get there, not speaking of the relation of result vs efforts & cost of the equipment.

On the other hand, we all have too much time at the moment, so  who cares ...

I've toyed with several M-Mount (and other mount) lenses using simple helicoid adapters. Using the visoflex will get you best performance, but I'm shooting macro for fun and usually use live view.

Being boring at home. I am interested in using my M10 to play around macro photography. Are there anyone try it before? What kind of setup in term of lenses, lighting, etc? Thank you very much.

Oh and I only take macro shots when I'm bored at home as well!

Using the old Visoflex system for macro is great fun and the Makro-Adapter-M works well, not only with the Macro Elmar, but with all other longer M or screw-mount lenses with an M-adapter.

Though the best way for macro with an M which has liveview is getting an adapter R to M and using the excellent R-lenses which were specially made for macro.

The 1:2.8/60mm Macro Elmarit-R is easy to get on the second hand market and much less expensive than a normal M lens. You can add the Macro extender which is also not expensive and you have everything you could wish for your macro experiments.

If you really want the best you can get for macro, there is also the 1:2.8/100mm Apo.Macro-Elmarit-R. This lens was never surpassed in its class. Of course it is more expensive but still in the price range of normal second hand M-lenses - much cheaper though much better built than the Macro-Elmar-M.

There are several threads in this forum about using the macro lenses for R-System with an M with liveview.

Extension tubes can be used to take Macro shots using any, preferably longer, lenses. OUFRO (I hope I have spelt it correctly!) tubes can be bought very cheaply from e.g. Amazon.

LV deals with focussing so it will only work with digital cameras that have LV.

In my experience the main issue is that the M10 does not have an ability to trigger a flash and at the same time use the new electronic viso . Personally I see that as a big negative for what is supposed to be a system camera ..not just a camera for street photography. I discussed this with Stefan Daniels and he asked his engineers but so far they seem unable to fit a flash socket for studio lights nor do they seem able to include something in the app software that could trigger a flash nor introduce a accessory that fits into the hot shower and then supports a flash unit plus the viso . My guess is they do not see it as a burning need. and probably want people to move to SL2 which has a flash hot shoe and the viso bit is built into the camera.

I do some macro sometimes with the 90mm macro combined with macro rings, but the M10 is not the ideal macro camera. If you want to specialize on macro, you’d better buy a DSLR.

This lens is indeed THE reference for macro work.  100 mm gives you that extra reach, but it is the superb image quality that makes the 100 apo macro a one of kind lens.  If you can find one in fine condition don’t hesitate.

Macro Elmar-M 90/4 with goggles (which allows rangefinder focusing).  It doesn't allow as high reproduction ratios and other options, but it's still my favorite because the concept of macro photography with rangefinder focusing is especially fun to me. M10-P at f/9, ISO 100, two studio strobes.  100% crop shown.

Leica 100/2.8 APO-R (which is indeed a stunning lens, even if I have to live view focus it).

What is this? :)
