Thank you for indulging me in this tribute to a wonderful sea vessel with a proud heritage!

Must have been a great experience!

Unbelievable!  Had never expected to ever get underway with her, but then the planets aligned when my brother-in-law invited me to be part of his retirement ceremony that took place the evening before her annual Constitution Day celebration sail.  Always very limited space with a multi-year wait list often restricted to VIPs.  The Q2 was the perfect companion!

Isn't she one of heavy 44 gun frigates that were able to take on a British 3rd-rate? Manoeuvrability over gun power?

Not sure about the 3rd-rate part, Jaap, but she was definitely the heroine of the U.S. Navy's War of 1812 sea battles against Britain.  Her victory over the HMS Guerriere is what supposedly earned her the nickname "Old Ironsides."

Was that not the battle that her captain took her out of the harbour to challenge the British frigate and that they fought it out side to side by mutual consent?

My knowledge of naval history is dreadfully poor, but I believe you are correct that the two vessels battled while the GUERRIERE’s bowsprit was entangled in the CONSTITUTION’s rigging.  The GUERRIERE apparently lost all three masts while Old Ironsides received only minimal damage.

Bravo to you for your wonderful historical knowledge!

Back in September, I was able to sail aboard the USS CONSTITUTION, the world's oldest commissioned naval warship afloat.  The HMS VICTORY, Lord Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar, has actually been commissioned longer, but sadly she is in dry dock and no longer afloat.  This series comprises my selects while using the Q2 as a point-and-shoot for that once-in-a-lifetime experience...
