APO Summicron 50mm

I found APO Summicron 50mm is quite pricy - much more expensive than my beloved Summilux 50/14 ASPH. I tried to read many places how good it is. Some websites said the Lux50 ASPH is also the APO design - rendering no different from APO Cron at f/2. I read the review many places too. There are not the real comparison - rather, giving the compliment to this lens. I believe there must be the real different for Leica to put that price. 

Any users of APO Summicron 50mm here to share your thought? Thank you very much.

Since posting in the above thread, I acquired a black chrome version of the 50 APO, which resolves the ergonomic issues cited.  It’s even more expensive, but I got an offer too good to resist.  I’m using it in addition to my 50 Summilux ASPH; both more than capable of fine pics. I was similarly curious, so rented to decide. You’re the only judge that matters.

if you trust on higher price to judge that the lens is "better" than less pricey lens,

in my view you may be wrong.

 

In Leica world, I think that the price is high for what the objects offer, you can have better featured "same objects" ( if you can find ! ) with less money.

Leitz/Leica in the past offered so many "establishment" lenses some at very high price, Apo-Telyt-R 3.4/180, 2.8/280, 2.8/400, Summarex 1.5/85, Noctilux 1.2/50, Summilux 1.4/35 Aspherical (AA), and many more, ...etc.

For users who need those special lenses, in that period, there was no other choice.

Serious users knew that those expensive lenses were not the "best", but only best on their specialized domains.

 

Coming today, Leica offers on sale some establishment delightful lenses at prices that Leica judge will sell.

The Apo-Summicron-M 2/50mm asph. is one of them, along with 1.25/75, 1.5/90, 2.2/90, 0.95/50, etc.

 

In the end, the Apo-Cron 50mm may even be less good than Lux asph. 50mm ( if you need f/1.4 ! ) or Noctilux (if 0.95 is required !).

Some serious users have (with other 50mm lenses of course) Noctilux 0.95/1.0 along with Summilux and Apo- Summicron to choose from.

Nothing wrong with that, when they don't need the money for other things.

Recurrent question, see the links and comments above. In my modest experience, the 50/2 apo has less field curvature and better edge to edge sharpness below f/4. Its OoF rendition is generally smoother but it is more flare prone than the 50/1.4 asph.

I am a 'user'.It is a great lens - but so are the others. You either 'get' it or it's not for you.

Well I sold the 50lux after I got the 50APO,  however I wouldn't say 50APO is "better" they are different. 

I already have the Noctilux 50 0.95 and Voigtlander 50 1.2, so I got the fast 50mm covered. I much prefer the 50APO compactness and razor sharp image over the 50lux. 

The one thing I didn't like the 50lux is the swirl and busy bokeh, this is the sample of 50lux bokeh, you can clearly see the swirl and defined edges of the bokeh. Some people prefer this tho, it's more classic and dreamy look. While 50APO have more modern look. Horses for courses.
