Nachtmsk Posted March 4, 2020 Share #1 Posted March 4, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, There are many options of 50mm out there. It's hard to choose. I've narrowed it down a bit. F2 is fine. I'd like so stay relatively modern but doesn't have to be coded. I would be using this on an M6 and possible M10 (which I haven't gotten yet). My first choice would be a leica lens, but I know there are some other good brands out there as well. I'd rather not have the quirky 1.5 (zeiss?) lens that need to be back focused wide open. Suggestions/experiences please. Thanks, Mike

Ecar Posted March 4, 2020 Share #2 Posted March 4, 2020 Summicron v5 or Zeiss Planar 50/2. A matter of taste regarding rendering, but you can't go wrong with either.
a.noctilux Posted March 4, 2020 Share #3 Posted March 4, 2020 Each 50mm is a good choice, for some times or something anyway. Myself, after using/trying dozens of 50mm for decades of M using, my last choice is the modest but so nice Summarit-M 2.5/50mm my now favorite, even if I do keep some other 50mm (larger/bigger/lighter/focussing closer/triple-focal/ etc.) when I need.
Jeff S Posted March 4, 2020 Share #4 Posted March 4, 2020 The 50 Summarits (f2.5 or f2.4) have less tendency to flare than the 50 Summicron. Jeff
Dennis Posted March 4, 2020 Share #5 Posted March 4, 2020 (edited) I just bought a used Summicron V, it should arrive tomorrow 🙏 It's my first 50mm Rangefinder ever. I initially asked opinions in this thread about these new lenses: Leica Summarit, Zeiss Planar, and Voigtlander Nokton's. With the huge help of the community, I finally decided for one of the best 50mm in the world. There are many tips and feedbacks in the thread. I can't help you more than this because I'm a Leica newbie, all I needed to know was in the thread 🙂 Good luck Edited March 4, 2020 by Dennis
pippy Posted March 4, 2020 Share #6 Posted March 4, 2020 I'd pretty much just echo what's been said before. If you want f2.0 I'd go for the Version IV or V Summicron; if f2.4 / f2.5 is fine then the Summarits are superb small, light and more modern lenses. Philip. otto.f Posted March 4, 2020 Share #7 Posted March 4, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you want a Summicron and want it as flareless as possible then take the version iv, it has a much more effective hood than the v.
spydrxx Posted March 4, 2020 Share #8 Posted March 4, 2020 You don't indicate what type of rendering you like, what you tend to shoot most, or your budget, so it's really hard to direct you in a particular direction. So as a crapshoot I'd merely suggest a Summicron IV, although there are at least 15-20 other really good choices. I have traditionally kept 5-6 50mm variants on hand to accommodate my whims.
poli Posted March 4, 2020 Share #9 Posted March 4, 2020 I do have a summicron iv which is a perfect lens. Still i am toying with the idea to get a Summarit 2.4, since I really like my summarit 35 as well. Crazy perhaps...

Then picked up a used Summarit 35 2.5 (I like 39mm filters) and subsequently added a Summarit 50 2.5 - which has identical body and handling. They are now my main M10 lenses.

Same Summarit-M bite but having disreputable number of nice lenses, I tried my first Summarit-M 2.5/50 cheap pre-owned with suspicion. I loved the classic rendering a lot and the compact/light but solid feel when in use, I added the 2.5/35mm then 2.5/75mm when I found them second hand. I changed my suspicion into enthusiasm for the Summarit-M lens line. They are far from perfect but they do what I want them to do, as nice as other lenses but weighting much less and very compact to carry around. I was considering the Summarit before I posted but was concerned it might be an inferior lens to the f2; I too looked at it with suspicion. It's sounding really good though based on everyone's responses. Thanks Mike
a.noctilux Posted March 4, 2020 Share #13 Posted March 4, 2020 😉 I hope that what we say here doesn't push prices of Summarit-M up. I wait to complete my Summarit-M f/2.5 line with 90mm ( for cheap of course ! )...

The modern range of Summarits are superb lenses. End of Story. I have a version IV Summicron and love it to bits (the v4 and v5 Summicrons share the same optical construction and you can see above how many members like these lenses) but I suspect that the Summarit might be a 'better' all-round performer if you like a more 'modern' rendering and the loss of 1/2 stop isn't an issue. In fact I'm seriously considering picking one up myself... P.
james.liam Posted March 4, 2020 Share #15 Posted March 4, 2020 Or....hold off for a bit for the inevitable Voigtlander 2/50 APO. They nowadays release the M mount ~6 months after the E mount version.
Schittra Posted March 5, 2020 Share #16 Posted March 5, 2020 I am big fan of 50mm. My first 50mm was 'cron and I thought it was best lens ever. Until 2009, my boss sold me the used 'Lux50. It had been the lens that I never took off my black M6 since it was mounted. I sold my Leica and moved to Sony A7 for 4 years. When I back to Leica again, my first lens is 'Lux 50. I use it 50% of my photo. That's the reason to get another body because I know I will always use 'Lux50 most of the time (and let another body to be lens changing body). IkarusJohn Posted March 5, 2020 Share #17 Posted March 5, 2020 Best all round 50 M lens, in my view, is the 50 Summilux-M ASPH - good selection at reasonable prices on eBay.

With a iv you can’t get it in the inside pocket of your jeans jacket, which will go with the Summarit
farnz Posted March 5, 2020 Share #19 Posted March 5, 2020 If you like a gentler 'classic' look in your pictures then the 50/2 Rigid Summicron is for you. And it has the lovely scalloped focus ring, which makes it very enjoyable to use. Pete.
ardbeg Posted March 5, 2020 Share #20 Posted March 5, 2020 If you do consider 1.4 then 50mm Pre-ASPH is also quite nice.
