pmendelson Posted February 26, 2020 Share #1 Posted February 26, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I used to have the 21mm SEM and loved it on my M10. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with its performance on the SL2? I know Voigtlander is about to release the 21mm f/1.4 M mount, although the SEM had a certain something I loved about the files I got with it on the M10. I need a 21mm (or perhaps the 18mm SEM) to hold me over until the 21mm SL APO f/2 is eventually released! Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks, Peter

hicksbox Posted February 26, 2020 Share #2 Posted February 26, 2020 Hi, Here, some examples of the 21 summilux with the SL2... According to my dealer, the 21SL is not ready for soon, probably early 2021. https://photos.app.goo.gl/n1xAFyqTiERrLUce8
tom0511 Posted February 26, 2020 Share #3 Posted February 26, 2020 I have used 21 SEL on my SL (not yet on the SL2), when the 24-90 was not wide enough. I have no doubts it works fine on the SL2. Now I own the 16-35 and use that for ultra wide angle (because of the flexible zoom range).

sebben Posted February 27, 2020 Share #7 Posted February 27, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have both lenses. The 21mm seems fine I haven’t tried the 18mm yet. anything specific you are wondering about? overall I would say that the close focus of 0.7m is very limiting. Chuck Albertson Posted February 28, 2020 Share #8 Posted February 28, 2020 The 21 SEM works fine on my SL. I can set the aperture to f/8, set it at hyperfocal distance, and have a very expensive (and heavy) point'n'shoot camera.
pmendelson Posted February 28, 2020 Author Share #9 Posted February 28, 2020 The Voigtlander 21mm f/1.4 just became available so I ordered one - should be arriving today. After reading Diglloyd's glowing review of this lens in the Sony E-mount, it seemed to make sense to try this out on the SL2 before spending more on the SEM or other lens. I'll report back with my thoughts on it. Thanks. 1
scott kirkpatrick Posted February 29, 2020 Share #10 Posted February 29, 2020 I made a quick test of a few shots with the 18 M wide open at f/3.8 on my SL2 this afternoon. Awesomely sharp on center, but I have reservations about the edges. It will take more than one shot to determine what the problems were, and if stopping down to f/5.6 or more fixes it. (Or finding a flatter target and standing perpendicular to it.)
anickpick Posted March 1, 2020 Share #11 Posted March 1, 2020 (edited) The 18 M needs to be stopped down to F8 for acceptable performance in the outer 1/4th of the frame imo. Edited March 1, 2020 by anickpick
LeicaR10 Posted March 1, 2020 Share #12 Posted March 1, 2020 Pmendelson, Based on my experience with the 21 SEM, it works superbly with the SL II. The 18 SEM also works quite well on the SL II at f/8 & 11. But the best wide angle M lens that I found to date and use extensively is the 16-18-21 Tri-Elmar WATE with the SL II. The WATE at f/8 resolves across the frame, edge to edge in a most excellent manner with all three focal lengths. As for Lloyd's reviews, I long ago found his site quite biased and often flawed in his "testing". I stopped subscribing as such long ago. Jono Slack has written comments about M lenses on the SL II and he calls it the way he sees it. You might check out his site. r/ Mark
scott kirkpatrick Posted March 1, 2020 Share #13 Posted March 1, 2020 It does seem that a little stopping-down helps to complete sharpness across the frame for the more extreme M wide angles on the SL2. Since how much sharpness you require depends on the resolution to which you render or print, there is no substitute for doing some experiments yourself. But the SL2 definitely does better than the S1R in these cases.
