Hello all,

Just bought my very first M camera, and lots of newbie questions needing some help..  Using the manual of course as much as possible so as not to bore the heck out of you all, but it’s a big new pool I’ve jumped into and a world away from my beloved usual R series.
It’s just as heavy as the R6 and a grip may be in need, but enjoying it so far.

If anyone knows of any good video tutorials on the camera, I’d love to hear of.

 Q.  240 with a zeiss 35mm 2.8 (what I could afford).  Should I use it with lens detect on auto, turned off, or manual selection and if so what setting?

Thanks!

David

Hello David,

With the Zeiss 2.8/35mm not 6bit coded, I'd set lens detection to off first.

After trying this setting you can try to put one lens manually, but there is no choice for Leica 2.8/35mm,

I would try the "2/35"  the closest 35mm in manual choice.

I leave my M 262 on auto.  When my C Biogon T* 2.8/35 ZM is is mounted no lens is detected, of course.   I don't recall a manual selection for that lens, either.  Capture One doesn't have a profile for the Biogons, either.   I find the Catpture One generic profile works well.

I suppose it would be best to compare the settings, using a 2/35 in manual as a.noctilux suggests≥

Great lens on the M240. Hard to find a better one if you like contrasty results. Mine is hand coded as Summarit 35/2.5 just to remind me that it's not a Summicron or a Summilux but coding is not necessary at all with this lens. 35/2.5 flange below.
Edit: I would not use that coding on the digital CL as it corrects for distortion contrary to the M240.

There is a very good book by David Taylor called 'Leica Typ 240 expanded guide' which can be bought from Amazon for about GBP 15 plus shipping. I have a spare copy and am willing to send it in the post for the cost of postage (about GBP 2) plus a GBP 10 donation to the Rural Refugee Network. Any question you have about the M240 is answered in this book. If you are interested then please send a DM. Be quick because I am off to Spain in a few days to get away from rotten English weather.

Thanks Peter, a good book deserves keeping so I’ll look it up on amazon.  What a great community this is!

I have found a link on another forum page.  I’m learning, so it looks like the coding, which may not be needed is for exif and more importantly any vig.
