That's an interesting video.  He cites varying results with several different makes of camera.  Some run with external power from an ordinary phone charge, but most require PD.  Almost all will recharge the battery in the camera with an external basic charger.  I hope Leica will clarify what the SL2 will do (maybe as part of the next firmware upgrade).

Final post on this topic...

I was able to verify that PD designated equipment is required and works very well with the SL2. And, Leica needs to include very specific power requirements in their documentation.

To be clear, even if a charger says it covers the same wattage (volts/amps) steps that a PD compliant device uses, the charger does not work for providing power to the camera in an ongoing manner. It charges but does not provide ongoing power.

Thanks @scott kirkpatrick and @caissa for your persistence in getting me the correct information.

Tommy.

Problem is still current even after the latest firmware update, this topic was
mainly about 4k video but the problem also arises if you want to select
medium or high speed continuous shooting. Today I just sent an email
to Leica, it remains a ridiculous idea that the camera is useless for video
and action photography,

So update to the issue, it appears that native mount lenses do not have this issue from what I have been able to test. When using the MC-21 adapter with sigma EF lenses when the battery drops one bar the error message appears, on a full battery there is no issue. Without the adapter using the Sigma L mount 45mm 2.8 I was able to record the 4k cine 24fps until the battery died
...

I've just been bitten by this bug too. Just wanted to confirm that the battery issue does not occur with L-mount lenses, and it's a specific issue with the MC-21 adapter (which I was using with an EF tilt-shift lens).

Is is also an issue with the Leica M-L mount adapter too?

Thanks for the update. The issue doesn't occur with mechanical lenses, like M lenses.

It seems that the problem stems from an L-mount feature that allows lenses to communicate their power requirements to the camera. The first generation of non-Leica L-mount lenses had issues with this, but those were fixed in firmware. EOS lenses don't have an equivalent feature, so the camera has to assume that they have a high power draw (which many of them would, especially older designs). Shift lenses shouldn't draw much power, given that they don't have AF, but the camera has no way of knowing that.

Very interesting. I'm going to borrow a native Leica L-mount lens and do some testing.

all Leica lenses work without problems

Panasonic lenses can be an issue in video, 70-200 for example when extender is mounted.

The MC-21 sigma adapter still has the problem and you need external USB  battery to work over longer time. that applies to tilt-shift  lenses or any canon EF lens mount, since they use the sigma adapter to function.
