It's a marvellous WA lens. And it hardly flares; a factor that really put the lens in another league. And you don't need to use the largish shade (as long as fingers and sharp edges are kept away...). That being said, the 16-35SL not the optimal choice for pin-sharp, distortion-free astrophotography (where sharp stars into the corners, shot wide open, is desirable); here the SL24-90 at 24mm at f2.8 is the best lens I have used/tested (beating lenses like Nikon 14-24mm f2.8G, Zeiss Otus 28mm f1.4, Sigma ART 14mm f1.8, Leica 28mm Lux-M, all of the wa Leica S-lenses etc.).

For astrophotography I find the Sigma f/2 24-35 also excellent (I do not like the bulk of the SL24-90). At 24mm it delivers nice sharp stars across the full field also into the corners. At 28mm also about equivalent, but a bit weaker at 35mm in the corners. And quite fast (f/2) if needed. (And somewhat smaller than the SL24-90). (But for daylight use I favour the SL16-35.)

Tropical Storm Barry brought heavy rains and high winds yesterday to the Gulf Coast area, but the sun is out this morning, the winds have subsided, and the ocean is rough, yet beautiful following the storm.

Camera came today (S1). First test shots with the Novoflex adapter and M-Lenses.

This one is the Super-Elmar-M 18mm. Quality looks really good, corners are good too.

Finally caught up with my S1R, still working through the manual.  Love the viewfinder. I think I know how to make it focus where I want it but not sure about all the options for changing the focus target size.  Here's a simple test image, shot through motel room glass, but on a small tripod:

and a 100% crop from the center

and another from the upper left corner

no problems seen so far.  The contrast with Leica is total -- Leica "Wesentliches" provides one right way to do things, Panasonic seems to believe that one is unduly constrained without many ways to do them, and multiple options for what to call them, and which buttons to put them on.  I think I will stick with defaults only.

I'm having a curious problem.  Playing around in the menus to get the annoying sounds and actions for AF and shutter to go away I set the S1R into full silent mode and now can't get it back to normal.  Even the RESET option doesn't do it.  I miss my shutter sound!  Any suggestions?
