Questions from forum members to Leica about the upcoming S3

Recommended Posts

  • Will there be any lens update/releases planned with the new S3
  • Trade in offers for current S users?
  • With the new AF of the S3 will the upgraded lens with new motor stand the new AF?
  • Is it possible to add an external EVF?
  • Do we need to increase the shutter speed for the 64MP?

Not much need to know actually. This might be the most predictable introduction from any manufacture in recent history.

  • Retail price and trade in offer.
  • max exposure time and Noise reduction implementation.
  • Do we have EFCS?
  • future plan for the S system.

Probably too late, there was a beta forum a year or so ago...

John, not late at all.

The questions in this thread are about the final product S3, not about what was being discussed on some beta forum a year or so ago. If you have any questions about the upcoming camera you can post them here and we can try and get some answers from Leica themselves.

Kind regards, Peter

I have a few questions myself:

  • What happened in between photokina 2018 and the final release of the camera? Most people would have expected the camera to be brought to market earlier than the spring of 2020 since the announcement was already in autumn 2018. Perhaps Leica can explain a bit what they have been working on in the meantime. What did they do to make the S3 even better? Or was this all just due to the fact that there was no production space in the factory available with the success of the Q and the SL? Did it have anything to do with the availability of the sensor or the Maestro III processor, perhaps?
  • Could Leica please explain a bit more about the colour science that went into the S3? Were there any specific design choices made with the colour filter array or with the choice of a certain manufacturing process for the sensor?
  • How does Leica see the future of the DSLR design? I understand there cannot be any guarantees about the long-term future of the S system but does Leica feel that there may be a long-term client base for digital single lens reflex cameras like there is a long-term client base for rangefinder cameras?

Cost / trade in on S2 and newer, is the main one.  Most other things will be in the build by now I expect...

The burning issue for many of us .....Is the S3 AF noticeably better than the S 007 .  If so how as this achieved ..through changes in the hardware itself or only thru firmware .

I am indeed also interested in the AF performance in lower light

Yes, I am also hoping for improved autofocus in low light. Monday night I brought the 007 to a movie premiere in Amsterdam and I tried very hard with the 70 wide open and I got some nice keepers, but the lens was constantly hunting to find a focus lock. It was very dark in this location mind you, but it would be really nice if an S3 could improve on that.

Did you try back button focus by using the joy stick as the focus button? It helps AF in low light, also prefocusing manual first helps a lot...
